3d
After seeing how much 3D has come on over the past few years (after seeing the spectacular Avatar in 3D in an Imax) I'm now convinced that 3D will become the next big thing and will be mainstream in a few years. I've read that blu-ray is set to go 3D next year along with Sky HD (one channel at first) and 3D televisions are now being sold.
So what do you guys think? How long until it will be maintstream? |

Five Years.
Thanks to the almost universal adoption of digital delivery, the technology exists. They now have to rabbit on about standards (expect another VHS/Betamax, Bluray/HDDVD, type war) |

Interesting... I still don't think it'll be mainstream, affordably, for another 5 years.
I'd love to be proved wrong, as I can't bloody wait!!!

well on tvs its a free feature sooner or later, screens are fast enough to do the frame rate. its just a matter of whether they price the discs reasonably...and the lcd shutter glasses

Free??
They'll keep it priced high as a premium feature for ages.... In 10 years, I reckon all flatscreens will have a 3D mode... |

yes free, free as any 120hz or other feature is now, they have to compete. perhaps you are confused about how this works, it IS a free feature effectively since the tv simply has to be fast enough to display the frame rate, and thats been the natural evolution of display technology regardless. perhaps you are thinking some some of the previous attempts where the screen itself attempts to polarize or do something funky with the image which requires completely different hardware. this is simple 3d. the same kind you can get on your computer with the right 3d drivers and lcd shutter glasses.

So will people who already own a new HD set have to buy a new tv?

are they really? if they support 1080p@60hz then it could be a 30fps each eye mode. its not like you need special 3d lcd to play 3d pc games, you just need a fast refresh rate display and shutter glasses. now they may very well not bother adding such a compatibility mode, but its different than saying older screens are incapable. currently all you need for the avatar game in 3d is a 120hz set with hdmi

Will existing blu-ray players be able to play 3d blu-ray disks when they come out?
