...because the RATM campaign was unique, a one-off. Already on Facebook I've seen pages/groups backing Rick Astley, The Sex Pistols and RATM for next year's chart, which is still 52 weeks away.

What I'm trying to say is that the "market" will be so over-saturated with anti-X Factor acts next year that not one will be strong enough to pull through and get into the top 5, let alone number one.

Possibly but if this years taught us anything, its that X Factor is loosing its appeal even to X Factor fans... The most talked about act was Jedward..people are starting to grow out of the musical format X Factor produces. hence why it didnt get to number 1. you can say that there was this big fb campaign but its not the first time a campaign has happened.

The Sex Pistols campaign is now getting media attention, in a space of 2 days they have already 10,000 members (and growing) they are taking the time though as their target isnt for another six months yet.

And read it again the Pistols one is for June 12th 2010, when The X Factor are starting to film auditions.

I'm thinking that X Factor won't be xmas No.1 again. People will be even more aware of another campaign and willing to be involved again! I'm sure they'll be another major campaign targeted to go against x factor.

19 million viewers, 10 million voters and 500,000 singles sold in 7 days. You're right, it's dead!

I agree. The millions that watched X Factor final. They didn't go out and buy Joe McEldery's single.
I wish the whole programme was done away with and a move back to the old days when we had some great music and there was TOTP every week and people went out vinyl records and then in the nineties bought cd singles instead of downloading nowadays.

I think you've got too much time on your hands if you are thinking about next years X-Factor Chart position.

Seasons Greetings

450,000* Rage got the 502K

Plus they're rumoured to be moving it back a week so it avoids another hijack, but there is probably going to be another group set up after this years turnout, not by the Morters though.

im past caring now. the british public really are a bunch of sheep of the highest order. for a song which was released by a international star, to barely scrape into the top 30. only to be released by the winner of x factor, and go on to sell a ridiculously high amount, its just bizarre! if it beats 'pokerface' as best selling of 2009, then the british music industry really does have issues

What good will that do? The X Factor won't be releasing a single then... Either I'm being really slow, or that campaign doesn't make a bit of sense. What they'll be doing there is stopping genuine artists from getting to number one, while not hindering the X Factor at all.

I've seen many groups pop up on facebook over the past few days that seem to be from overly optimistic nieve people that think they can follow in the footsteps of this year's, although I agree that with so many they're all just going to cancel each other out.

I don't think they will therefore definatly get the #1 next year, but if they don't it will have to be down to a song being actually liked more not just fueled by compaigns and such.

Carnoch said 7 days, you quoted a 6 day sales figure (Monday to Saturday).

450,000*7/6 = 525,000 so there's a fair chance that Joe did sell 500,000 in 7 days given that it was the last Sunday before Christmas, perhaps even more than RATM.

[/pedantry]

Really bored with this x-factor thing now, but wanted to mention I like the Pistols campaign, they were robbed of a number 1 first time round, and it really would be deserved.

Yeah, it's not an X-Factor campaign, but now we know campaigns can swing these things, let's go for others. After all the Pistols sold most records in '77, yet was kept off number 1 by nefarious methods, so this is a decent one to genuinely subvert.

The only way the X-Factor will achieve the Christmas number one, would be if they had a winner that was near perfect with their singing and they had an outstanding song. To have the people's mouths watering over the song, you need someone who's utterly outstanding. This would likely beat any campaign that might get started near to Christmas next year.

The only reason this year's winner's song got beat, was because they never had a truly outstanding song with a truly outstanding singer. If the winner had been someone like Hayley Westenra, that campaign wouldn't have stood a chance.

Also to the OP.. What if YOU personally don't like the X Factor song next year?? Its a bit of a stretch to be supporting a song you haven't even heard yet.. this is why X Factor music fans get called sheep.

I'll only ever buy the X-factor single, if it is an original song written by the winner. If it is a cover of something no way!

The Pogues should get it next year for the first time. Nice marking of ten years since MacColl's death.
