Of course you can manufacture a solo artist. You take them and tell them what you want them to do... that's manufactured. They have no free will in their job.

It's not rubbish at all. Most of them do what the label tell them to do; they have to. They are nothing but money making machines (there's obviously going to be exceptions; there is with everything in the entertainment world).

I'm not sure, but I think he has sold more albums than Girls Aloud.
He has fought big battles to be taken seriously as an artist, and he's not totally won the war, but hats off to him for his 5 platinum albums to date. I don't think he gets enough credit for his achievements. I think there's a lot more to come from him too. I'm not sure how long GA have as a girlband, it will be interesting to see what happens next for them.

Ok, then, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and the afore-mentioned Lena Zavaroni all won talent shows.
And I still say that solo singers such as Will, Lemar and possibly Leona are not manufactured.

There are artists who have a strong identity of their own, who make their own decisions and have a hand in writing their own material. Will is an obvious example because he totally broke away from Simon Cowell (who really had no interest in him anyway at the time
).
But he said something interesting in an interview recently, which was it's a myth that people like Leona Lewis have no control over their output and their careers, in that you can't be successful unless you have strength and opinions. I assume he's talking from insider experience there.
I'm sure successful artists like Will,Lemar, Leona etc are guided and listen to advice by their record companies (as are all artists anyway because any release has to be approved by the record company first), but ultimately that have to have their own strength of character to survive in the cut throat business they've chosen.

Exactly. There are plenty of groups put together by managers/producers - Take That, Boyzone, Westlife, the Spice Girls, the Saturdays, the Backstreet Boys, NSync, the list goes on ............... and likewise plenty of solo singers "discovered" doing something bearing no relation to singing by managers/producers, but they don't seem to be seen as "manufactured" because they didn't come from a reality TV show. Yet, these reality TV shows have discovered a few of the best voices of recent years.

I do, a non-manufactured band wouldn't survive that many member changes. That many member changes means the members don't matter, their input is minimal as it all gets done for them bar the performing (and even then they probably mime).
I do like some sugababes stuff though so they are a decent shout.
EON your definition is spot on. Therefore, Will doesn't count! No-one would tell him to wear something he didn't like or, since his first year under contract to Pop Idol, tell him what to sing!
