I'm a fan but i'd be the first to admit apart from Nadine & Nicola, the rest have really weak voices. However, the secret to their success is: catchy songs.

Xenomania write all their songs don't they? They're well managed, have catchy songs, good videos, high profile band memebers, huge tours. Essentially, they're a BRAND!

I don't really know why I like them...I just do!

The songs are generally quite catchy, and they don't all sound the same. Also, there's not really many girl groups out there atm.

The Saturdays and Sugababes, plus Girls Can't Catch are trying to crack the industry. They're more fashionable because of Cheryl IMO.

I can't explain how, because i simply don't know how to but i think GA have changed the era of Girl bands, for example, i think GA rate just that little bit higher above the sugababes, and much higher above those like the saturdays or girls cant catch.

Essentially, if a girl band gets more success than GA then a pat on the back.

Because the question was posed on DS who have an above average number of Gay posters. Let me guess the top three were..

Girls Aloud
Lady GaGa
Take That

Girls Aloud are at the top of the list in regards to girl bands.

Sugababes have no stage presence any more, The Saturdays latest album was a flop, and Girls Can't Catch aren't very popular.

There was a documentary on C5 last year called 'Girls Aloud: Where did it all go right?' which the OP may be interested in watching (on Youtube)

Anyway, they've been successful thanks to great management, great songs and great personalities.

Most critics love them - from the likes of NME to The Guardian, The Times, etc. thanks to absolutely BRILLIANT pop songs from Xenomania. You cannot deny the awesomeness of Brian and Miranda!

Their image and brand is also great - compare pictures of them to when they started and all looked like, well, chavs, to now. Guys want them and girls want to be them/dress like them.

Then there is the group themselves, they all have very different and unique personalities. They handle themselves well in interviews, have a laugh at themselves and are generally just nice, down to earth woman.

The other thing they do well is dance and perform, they put on a show.

Are they the best singers in the charts? No, but their singles are great, they're brilliant performers and most importantly (for me) I enjoy listening to their music, watching their videos and seeing them on tour

For those who criticise the Babes, at least they can all sing live, unlike Chav Cole, party hard Harding and Kimberly.
IMO, the babes were at their best when when it was Mutya, Keisha and Heidi.
The reason for GA's success is Xeomania.

They really arn't that succesful. Yes, people go on about this consecutive top 10 singles or whatever. So What!? They haven't had any 'huge' successes in terms of songs, and their albums have done worse apart from the last one.

They have only really become popular in the last couple of years. They have been around for 8 years and have sold 10 million records. Spice Girls were around for half of that and sold 75 million records. , if they were around today, Girls Aloud would have been wiped them from the music industry probably. Its like comparing Take That and Five

I hope not! What is message is Cheryl Cole sending out in life? To marry a footballer (a dream way too many young girls trive for nowadays anyway) then ignore his cheating because well he's a footballer right and you don't want to lose that WAG tag?

We'd not had a big girl band in the uk in a while, so I think people were ready for one at that time.

Also, it was at a time when big talent shows hadn't become quite as tired and cliched as they now seem to have become.

Then I think it was just as simple as having some really catchy songs.

I don't want them. When they first got together I saw them on a chat show, and thought they looked like a collection of waxworks. Honestly, none of them are that attractive, in looks or personality, and there's thousands of girls who look like them tumbling out of every club pissed on a Saturday night. Cheryl Cole is particularly vile.
Xenomania write good songs though. It wouldn't matter who sang them, as long as they had half decent voices. It's clear that Cheryl doesn't even have that, but they make it passable with computer technology. So actually, a computer could sing these songs and they would still be pretty good.

While I would say that Xenomania are hugely important to Girls Aloud, it isn't simply about them. If it was, then Frank, Mania, Gabriella Climi and various other would all be huge (and after this weeks sales, it looks like we can add Mini Viva to that list)

You can basically divide their career into pre and post The Greatest Hits.

I'm sure there's an interview somewhere where the management basically said that they had to balance out good songs with covers to sell the albums; hence we had Jump and I'll Stand by You.

In the same interview they pointed out that everybody talks about how great 'Biology' is now, but at the time Radio 1 wouldn't playlist it. While they built a solid and loyal fanbase, they weren't doing that well.

Then the Greatest Hits came out and suddenly people realised they loved them. Ofcourse, Cheryl being on the X-Factor helped 'The Promise' and 'Out of Control' to sell.

They are mediocre at best. Their music is cheesy pop and their look overdone and fake. But of course Britain is always conned into buying into things like that.

It's all down to good management, good press and catchy songs. The Sugababes(in all their incarnations) are much better singers than they are, but they have less tabloid presensce and hence the reason why GA are more successful.

Exactly. It is nothing to do with the girls themselves.

If a better girl band was around then they would never have taken off.

You so right there

Let's see how GA do without Xenomenia.

Girls Aloud are successful because most young Brits nowadays love bad music.

People are fine with having music dictated to them instead of seeking their own.

Because theres no other British pop group producing semi decent pop tunes, no competition.
If we had a Britney, a Beyonce or a Pussycat dolls they'd soon dissapere into reality TV and make up ranges.

It's all about marketing that is what mainly drives sales nowadays not the pop artists themselves. The aforementioned American pop artists have had relentless marketing done for them in the U.S and Europe whereas U.K ''talent'' *snigger* have only had their music marketed in U.K and some European countries and therefore naturally would be nigh on impossible to crack the American market unless they wrote a world beating song which English pop music have not done since the 80s and the heydey of Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys & Bananarama.
