bluray specs
I'm clueless about these things so simple answers please!!! What are "coaxial out" "optical out" and "multichannel out"? Some bluray players have all 3 some 2 and some just 1. How important are any of these specs, thanks.

Optical & Coaxial are digital sound outputs for use mainly with Dolby Digital & DTS into an older amplifier which does not have HDMI inputs. Due to restricted bandwidth these are unable to carry the later HD sound formats (Dolby True HD & DTS HD Master).
The analogue 5.1 outs are again for older Amps. without HDMI that have 5.1 inputs, this allows the HD sound formats processed in the BD player to be output in analogue for amplification ![]() Put simply if you have a modern Amp. with HDMI input just but a run of the mill BD player something like a Sony 360 will give superb rersults.

Thanks for the replies. If it helps I haven't bought anything yet. I've chosen a tv (samsung UE40B7020) which will leave me a maximum £1500 to spend on a bluray player, amp (is this also called a receiver?) speakers, stand and cables. Any recommendations? I don't have sky but may do in the future.

As for the TV; you could do an awful lot better for the money, LED backlit are what the sheds push as they make most money on them & they do look great in brightly lit stores but it's different when you get them home. Due to the way they work you loose a lot of shaddow detail etc. Backlight bleed is also often a problem too. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not against LCD sets as such you could simply get a far superior set for your money in a Panasonic Plasma G10 or V10 (better option)

Dealers understandably do not tend to like them & often try to imply they use grey imports & graded items etc. due to their agressive pricing but from my experience this is not the case. Sometimes they sell open box items at reduced cost, however if this is not stated the goods will be new & UK sourced.

If you're anywhere near Leicester, I can whole-heartedly recommend the team there. They are all enthusiasts. We were pleased with Mark who is building his own cinema room in his cellar. He talked with enthusiasm about what we were thinking of buying and respected our knowledge. As a result we bought an Onkyo 876 receiver and a Denon 1800 Blu-ray player to team with our 50in Pioneer Kuro plasma. Avoid Dixons and Curry's as their sales people usually talk a load of balls and simply try and sell the customer the most expensive piece of kit. I only go in there if I'm bored and fancy watching a salesperson talk a load of twaddle. Go for it. |
