Hi all

I have recently been given the above and all I have is the screen and power cord. What I'd like to do is us it with my Virgin Media V+ box. I've noticed there is an HDMI connection at the back of this, and a DVI connection on the screen itself. Can anyone please advise what I need to do to use the screen as a TV by connecting the monitor to the V+ box? I can't believe it's as simple as getting a DVI to HDMI cable and plugging one into the other (though it'd be great if it were) so if there's other things I need to get, could someone please help and tell me exactly what and where? Thanks in advance!

HDMI and DVI use the same video connections but DVI has no audio. Provided the dvi port is hdcp compatible all you need is a hdmi to dvi adaptor. You will however need a seperate lead for the audio (usually RCA phono stereo or a mini stereo jack)

Thanks for the reply! Beside the DVI connection on the monitor it says RGB3 and DVI (Digital RGB). Next to this are two plug holes and the words Audio 3 (R and L(Mono)). From the top on the side of the monitor, there are connections for Video (Video1 In/Out), Video 2 and Video 3, Audio1 (R and L (Mono)), DVD1/HD1 (Y, Cb/Pb, Cr/Pr), Audio 2 (R and L(Mono)), RGB2/DVD2/HD2 (R/Cr/Pr, G/Y, B/Cb/Pb, HD, VD), RGB1 (In/Out), Audio 3 (R and L(Mono)) and RGB3 (DVI (Digital/RGB). There's then a connection for External Control and Remote.

I don't have access to a virgin box, if the box has 3 rca phono sockets marked yellow red and white. If so you just need two phono cable from the red and white audio outputs to the audio 3 in on the display. If not you need a scart adaptor to bring out the audio connections.

Well, it is.

HDMI to DVI for picture
Stereo phono to stereo phono (the red & white audio connectors) for sound

You might need to check some settings in the V box for the audio output and do similar on the TV, but chances are that this will work pretty much straight away.

Signal come out of sources; hence the use of the word output.

You want to be looking for the audio outputs. See this picture LINK and look for the word output. It should help you find the same sockets on your box, as long as your box is similar of course.

The signals go in to the display device. I think you've worked this out already since you said something about "AV3 - audio in" or similar in an earlier post.

First pic is the V+ box I had installed yesterday, second one is the monitor. Just cannot see any way to connect the sound if it does not go through the HDMI cable. Apologies for being so lacking in knowledge regarding this but I really don't know! There are two scart leads on the V+ box, I obviously wouldn't need one of those which currently goes into the TV. Can I get a Scart adapter at Currys/Comet etc?

Ah-ha! The picture of your V+ box helps tremendously.

Right, what you need is something to help you get at the audio signals running through the SCART socket. The thing you want is called a "SCART with audio breakout". This is the sort of thing...LINK

On your V+ box you would unplug the SCART cable going to the TV. Plug in the adapter, and then plug the SCART cable back in to the new socket. The adapter gives you a red & white phono connector for audio. Just flick the switch to out to make sure it is an output. Plug in some phonos from your new output to Audio 3. That'll give you sound to go with your pictures via the HDMI/DVI

Brilliant! I'll try and get them tomorrow. Rather than put this on a wall, can these be put onto a stand (and, if so, what type)? Thanks again for the replies, appreciate this as I'd still be scratching my head even now........

Of course you can put it on some sort of stand. However, any attempt by us to here to make some specific recommendations is futile. There are just too many combinations of style, colour, design and price.

Have a look using Google. Search on the term "cantilever plasma stand" or some similar combination. You'll find lots and lots of choices

I've got the relevant calbes and plugged them all in, but when switching on the monitor I get RGB/PC1. Anyone help? I'm guessing a remote is needed to change the channels as it were but also wondering if there's a switch or panel somewhere on the monitor?

There's normally a button somewhere that gives you access to the monitor controls via an on screen menu.

manual here

Sorry they are the extra speakers continuing looking

Err....forgive me for stating the obvious but you've got the panel in front of you.... and a pair of eyes (or at least one functioning eye) I presume? Have you tried actually looking at your telly for yourself and trying a few buttons before posting here?

Really don't think there's any need for the sarcasm, of course I have eyes and of course I've looked all round the monitor to try and find a panel for manual control. And there isn't that I can see. I came on here for advise and appreciate those who have given me advice, thanks again to those. There is no flip down panel on the monitor, that's one of the first things I looked for.

I wasn't sarcasm, or certainly not intentional at least... but when you wrote:

you can appreciate how that could be interpreted as a lazy get-out. Now if you'd wrote that you'd already looked, or that you'd tried some button combinations, then that would have put an entirely different perspective on post #15.

Like so many here who have offered you help I have taken the time to look at NEC's web site on your behalf for some product information. I suspect that you have an incomplete or incorrect model number. I think PX-42sp1 is possibly the part number of the speakers? You should check out the set again, and maybe even remove the bracket, so you can find the right model number then have a look at NEC's support site to download the manual. Here's a link

It's unusual for a monitor to have absolutely no controls (TV's yes, but monitors no) as they're likely to be used without a remote from time to time. However, if yours is that rare exception then perhaps you'll need to bite the bullet and buy a replacement. After all, the monitor came to you free so it's not like you've been stiffed in the deal. Google is your friend.

Apologies for an incomplete post - sorry! Anyway, thanks for your reply. Been all over google past 48 hours trying to locate stuff and, I think, you might be right with the incorrect number. I'll lay it on it's face and try again. Cheers.

Got it connected, up and running, sound fine and picture great, so thanks to everyone for their advice. Just one further wee question I'd like to ask. There are a couple of scratches on the screen, any way of repairing these (you know, like you would a tiny chip on a car windscreen or the like)? Nothing absolutely major, but they are noticeable and I'd like to remove them if possible..

Just gotta get a stand sorted but I'm on the case.........!
