Simple question regarding iPods/iTunes

Please be gentle with me, as I'm new to this iPods mularkey.

Do iPods and iTunes etc use the MP3 format, or do they have a file extension all of their own, ie exclusive to Apple?

iTunes and iPods support MP3 files, but by default songs you import from CD via iTunes are ripped in AAC (.m4a file extension). This isn't exclusive to Apple though, as most other media players and portable devices support it these days.
You can change the preferences in iTunes though and tell it to rip to MP3.
