Well, chart music hasn't been the greatest this year, so I spent most of my time looking up old artists. When I mean old, I don't mean it has to be 60's music etc., it could have been a band from 2008! Here's who I discovered;

Radiohead
Blur
Pulp
The Clash
David Bowie
The Stone Roses
Daft Punk
The Streets
Gorillaz
Jeff Buckley
Massive Attack
Pink Floyd

So, have you discovered any old artists/bands?

not a bad list

the majority of bands i listen to are from the 60s, 70s, some 80s and 90s, and then some more modern stuff - but most of it i didn't discover this year.

maybe you could count:
the chi-lites
hello saferide
marianne faithful (to a further extent than before)
pet shop boys
the stylistics

Lots of bands/artists I knew about but only started listening to (and loving) this year:

Scott Walker
Tom Waits
Jeff Buckley
Elliott Smith
Nina Simone
Dusty Springfield
Dead Can Dance
Spiritualized

And if we're counting more recent acts as well then I'll add The Veils, Shearwater, The Leisure Society, The Antlers, The Organ and The Clientele.

I pretty much got into music in 2007 (as in beyond extremely casually hearing stuff on radio). It all started when my friend showed me a video of The Pretender by Foo Fighters. Then I listened to a bunch of their other stuff and started getting into their music, and he recommended me more bands. I then bought Guitar Hero 3 because it was great fun when I played it at a friends' house, and started exploring the back catalogues of bands in the game like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Muse.
