Sorry if there has already been a thread on this, but it would'nt let me search for three letters.

I was thinking of getting a LED tv as they look very sexy, but are they any good?

£2.5k is a lot to waste if they are rubbish.

Lots of information on the subject here http://www.avforums.com/forums/oled-flcd-televisions/

Early days for OLED. 3D will probably be introduced next year but that, like HD, will no doubt take a long while to develop. I would just like a set which will show fast moving sports and SD as good as my Sony 32" Trinitron crt, which might decide to cave in. At the moment they are selling expensive TV's which will only deliver satisfactorily with enhancers such as Blu-Ray, Sky HD, and Virgin HD. I wish you luck.

Well they aren't LED TV's, they are just LCD TV's with LED backlighting - main advantage is their slimmer profile.

Real LED TV's are still a long way off (apart from tiny expensive ones).

LED backlight TVs can produce richer colours and better black levels than conventional LCDs, but they have a serious drawback. All current models that I know of use global dimming, which makes it possible to show a completely black screen, but as soon as anything lighter appears (like text for example) there can be a jarring shift in brightness. Local dimming is better but is more expensive to implement (and it can't be used on the edge-lit designs favoured by Sony and Samsung).

Heres a link to a group test for LED tv's which you may find usefull.
Tv's tested are LG 42SL9000, Samsung UE-40B7020, Sharp LC-40LE600E, Toshiba 46SV685.

and local dimming is not without its issues, it depends how smart they are about when to dim, they have to make sure it gets dark wtihout losing detail/light spots. and theres backlight resolution as well. cheaper ones will have far less leds. and of course rgb led is best but very rare.

2.5k is a total waste for ANY TV you buy to be perfectly honest. I can think of better ways to waste the 2.k (minus the £500 on a TV that will last a couple of years at the most)

The vast majority of flat screen TVs will last far longer than 2 years, unless you buy tat, especially from that shop in the midlands.

LED backlit TV's are not without their problems; cloding & backlight bleed are common (just like many LCD sets) but the main issue has been pointed out; lack of shaddow detail due to the way they try & improve blacks. Take a look over Here at the many disappointed owners, then do yourself a favour & but a Panasonic V10 Plasma

Oh yes & disregard anything Andy Carlton say's, he has real issues with anything which is not a CRT & he really thinks that all LCD & Plasma only last 2 years at best (sad really) this despite both Sony & Panasonic giving a 5 year Guarantee

And I'm still waiting for Andy to get back to me about that guarantee he was offering on LCD's on another thread and to advise where I can buy a new quality branded CRT widescreen TV... I did check with the MET office who advised I'd be waiting till Hell froze over.

And what about a quality 50" branded CRT capable of HD PQ
