Will a BluRay disc play on a standard DVD player?
As subject, basically! I realise it won't give hi definition, but can I play a BluRay disc on a standard DVD player, or is it a totally different system?

Totally different.
DVD uses a red laser wavelength and Blu uses a Blue laser wavelength which allows for the smaller pits and higher capactiy on the same size optical disk. Some Blu releases now come with a DVD and there is even some talk about combos (Blu one one side and DVD on the other) making a return. Blu-ray players can be found under £100 these days so much more of an option than they were a year or two ago and og course Blu-ray players play DVD's (Region coding still in effect). |

nope.
but a dvd can play in a blu ray player. and that dvd will be upscaled meaning it's picture quality will be increased although it won't reach HD type resolution |
