Blu Ray and Other HD connections - ADVICE PLEASE!!
Some help please...
I have an HD TV, only 2 HDMI sockets. Connected are 1 SKY HD box and a Sony DAV-DZ260 surround sound system, both via HDMI. The TV is connected to the Sony via an optical cable for watching TV through the Sony. My question is, I want to purchase a Blu Ray player and to reep its benefits. However not sure how to do it. I have thought about connecting the B.R via HDMI along with sky to the TV and connect the B.R to the Sony via optical for the sound. Still not sure whether to then connect the Sony or how. Thanks in advance for your help and advice. |

Thanks for that, had already thought about that way but its the sound that is confusing me.
I think I can connect the B.R to the Theatre via coax and leave the tv connected via optical. The theatre can connect by scart just for a connections sake. My other thought is can I connect 2 connections into my sony theatre system from 2 seperate devices? |

When you say go for this is that my suggestion or yours!!??
I am confused. Not sure at all about this! Surely if I connect the blu ray to the TV via HDMI and then select the amp receiver input to TV I would hear the sound in 5.1? |

Ok, it is late!!
Do you know about receiving the sound. Would I need to connect my Blu ray via coax or optical to enjoy 5.1 if it was connected to my TV by HDMI lead? Is that not double connecting? |

Dont believe I can choose my sound inputs.
I can select on the amp the following inputs: DVD, Tuner, USB, TV, DMPORT. I guess I would have to select "TV" and then Decode with the menu. |

The Sony DAV-DZ260 is somewhat limited, it is a budget audio system with a built in DVD player.
It has one (or possibly two) SCART output which also seems to allow audio in, and one HDMI output. You have only two hdmi sockets on your TV. These will be desgned to take video and (maybe) audio signals from the source equipment. Your sources are: Sony DVD & audio centre - uses 1 hdmi (audio played by audio centre automatically). If you use the SCART output for this to the TV, that will leave both the HDMI sockets free on the TV for the Sky and Blu-Ray player. Hopefully the TVs upscaler is better anyway. Sky Box HD box - you need either component video (not the yellow composite or RGB via SCART) or HDMI to TV and optical to Sony DVD Your proposed third source is a Blu Ray player. This will need to have a coaxial audio output, and it will also need either component or HDMI. The audio from both the Sky and the Blu ray player will need to go via the coax and optical inputs on the Sony But you might find that if you use both the optical/coax inputs on the Sony you will need to turn off the Sky box when the Blu-ray is in use, and vice versa. And by that I mean you will need to ensure that no digital information is being transmitted. This sometimes means you have to turn off the power to the unused device. Hopefully, you won't mind not having audio to the TV, as the Sony should do it all. I'm also trusting you don't need to use the Freeview receiver on the TV. If you do, does your TV have two RGB enabled SCART sockets? I'm also a bit confused with the Sony's specs two SCART sockets are listed, but there's a NO against one of them. But it has Audio In specified. So I can't be sure whether it exists or not, and what its capabilities are, if it does. If it doesn't exist you're going to have problems getting the audio from the TV to the Sony (for Analogue Surround (Dolby Surround should work) & Stereo). I can only hope that a fully wired SCART cable might be able to help (not all SCART cables are equal), and you have the ability to switch from SCART out to SCART audio in, or the Sony can do that automatically. Don't take the Output Switching titles on the selector too literally. Figure out what title refers to what input and translate as appropriate. But my personal recommendatio is to junk the Sony, it's not good enough for your projected needs. Sorry if you're the person who got it as a christmas present, but facts is facts. It's cheap. |

Hi,
Sorry to hi-jack this thread but I was wondering if anyone could help advise me on how to connect my Sony TV (KDL 40w4000), Sony surround sound (DAV DZ 260), my Sky HD and my PS3, so that I get the optimum from each system. Thanks. |

Thanks for your reply and very useful information. I did not get the present for christmas but it is only 1 year old. I had spent last night and the morning thinking about it and had come to virtually the same conclusions as yourself. With regard to the Sony DAV-DZ260 which system would you recommend? Sony or another? I am not bothered about freeview from the TV. Sky HD can be connected direct to the Sony via optical. The Blu Ray will be connected via HDMI and coax optical to the 260. On the back of the 260 there is one scart connector. sps1013 |

Find your budget, then study your needs, then go and LISTEN to something.I'd recommend a separate AV Amp (or receiver) and a suitable speaker set that will suit it electrically. But your ears are your own best friend. Asking someone else to choose your audio equipment for you is like asking them to tell you that you should get a siamese cat, when you would really prefer a rottweiller. Both are absolutely delightful, but we all have our own preferences. |
