Seems to me most people are listening to Westernised popular music styles (mainly of British & American origin) from the last 50 years.

Considering there are about 190-200 countries in the world, each having 100-2000 years of history behind them, confining oneself to music produced in the last 50 years from predominately 2 countries doesn't strike me as varied.”

I really don't have enough years in my life to explore 2000 years of music history for 200 countries. So, I'll consider the definiton of varied as implied by this thread as varied enough.

Pretty varied. It ranges from Motorhead to Michael Jackson, Johnny Cash to Jamaroquai, Frank Sinatra to Franz Ferdinand, and Chopin to Saliva.

Mine is fairly varied though it does lack much pre-1990s music, hiphop/rap, non pop jazz, classical, boybands, blues, and a lot of "regionised" music.

So I have things like Old Mans Child (black metal), Belinda Carlisle (80s pop), VNV Nation (EBM), Godflesh (Industrial), Kasey Chambers (Aussie Country), Faith Hill (US Country), Nicklecreek (Bluegrass), Diablo Swing Orchestra (Avant Garde metal), Kent (Swedish indie), Color Filter (Japanese electronica), Sepiamusic (Trip Hop), De/Vision (German Synthpop), Elisa (Italian pop), Forever Slave (Spanish Symphonic Metal), Helloween (German Power metal), Sol Invictus (Neo-folk), Beautiful Creatures (glam rock), The 69 Eyes (Finnish goth rock), Senser (Rap rock), Sugababes (pop), Stabbing Westward (Industrial rock), Greenday (punk rock), The Bosshoss (Comedy Country), Dresden Dolls (Dark cabaret), HorrorPops (psychobilly), Lifehouse (christian rock), Los Pacaminos (UK Texmex), Katatonia (Dark metal), Vienna Teng (piano pop), Chromeo (2-step), Faithful Dawn (Dark wave), Theatre of Tragedy (Beauty & Beast), Rebkka Bakken (Norwegian Jazz Pop), Ayumi Hamasaki (Jpop), Yelle (French Electro), Ashbury Heights (dark electro), Boom Boom Satellites (Japanese Drum&bass), Seth Lakeman (folk), Bebel Gilberto (Bossa Nova), Zeigeist (visual art pop), etc.

Style is the factor which decides variety to me more than anything- not age or country of origin, since different countries can produce similar music- the same goes with age.

I like numerous completely different genres- everything from indie and rock to shoegaze and classical, and then more obscure music like progressive metal.

I would say my taste is pretty varied.

Probably something to do with the fact that (I assume) most people in this thread live in the West.

Having a varied taste doesn't mean you need to like things from the obscure to the in-your-face pop music. There is a lot of variation in Western music.

Many music styles in the West derive from other places anyway. M.I.A, for example take influences from Asian and African music, and Bjork's most recent album is influenced by African sounds and visuals. They just "Westernise" them because our ears like that formula.

In fact, there's a lot of variation within specific genres.

Mine mixed from

Bon Jovi to Beyonce,
Saving Abel to Sam Cook.
3 Doors Down to 3 Tenors,
Miley Cyrus to Madness,
Bob Marley to Beatles,
Wet Wet Wet to Whitesnake.

In other words I like most music.

I listen to all sorts, from Akon, Lil Wayne, Birdman and Drake to U2, Springsteen, Radiohead and Leonard Cohen. From shallow pop music to asian guys with giant woppers, my Ipod has it all.

Know what you mean . I can get Radiohead followed by Mozart.
