I don't know if this thread has been done already, but I want to do one now as I feel the time is right.

So who is your favourite companion of the new who up to this point ?

There are LOADS to choose from

Very definitely Rose for me, mainly because I fancy Billie Piper, but she is a really great companion even apart from that. I liked Martha a lot too. Donna was fine, but I never understand why some saw her as so exceptional.

I liked them all, Martha more after she left the doctor rather than when she was with the doctor tbh, but my favourite has to be Donna.

They were best pals, I liked how she often made him more human (and how ultimately he made her more Timelord) I liked the comedy she brought but also the emotion and drama being about what was going on in each adventure rather than being about emotion between assistant and doctor.

I also liked how she really benefited from being with the doctor (until the end of course) and how it made her feel she was worth something and being a temp wasn't always a bad thing because of all the things she had learnt.

Plus I found her ending truly truly heartbreaking, I think the moment of realisation on her face as DoctorDonna about what the Doctor would have to do to save her is my most memorable moment of any series of NewWho because it really is heartbreaking.

I also think Catherine Tate more than proved her doubters wrong (as did Billie Piper to be fair) that she wouldn't make a suitable companion.

K-9, of course.

Donna is second.

Donna for me. Didn't have the romantic edge to the partnership and had a very earthy quality about her to go along with her wide eyed wonder. Probably never had the longevity that other companions had, but certainly made series four the best of the new series I think.

As for short terms or one offs: I did really enjoy Adelaide. Her scenes with the Doctor were great, but you really bought into the relationships with her team members too. Lindsey Duncan was a stand out guest performer and that final scene with her callling the Doctor up on his meddling was terrific.

K9

Then Sarah Jane.

Then Martha.

Got to be Donna but Wilf is coming a close second just now...

Great line in the tardis:

No contest. Donna by a country mile

Rose was deeply annoying because of her ridiculous obsession with the Doctor. Martha wasn't much better in that respect, and was wooden into the bargain. and Donna was Catherine Tate. I vote Mickey.

Donna, followed closely by Rose. Both were fantastic.

Wilf and Adelaide both very good also. None of the others floated by boat at all, and K9 was just a sheer annoyance. I could do without ever hearing that voice again.

Definitely Donna. She was/is everything a companion should be.

Donna is my favourite. I liked how you could have a guy and a lady travelling aruond alone together and there wasn't any romance to speak of just pure total love and friendship for each other. Plus it was good to see how she changed and believed in herself a little bit more even before she became DoctorDonna. The Super Temp will always be my favourite companion.

I'll be in the minority here but my favourite was ... Martha. I think it's partly due to series three being the best, in my opinion. I thought she was a capable actress and I think she matured more than any of the other companions throught the time she was with the Doctor.

As for a one-off companion, I'm in the minority again but I really liked Astrid. Also, Madame De Pompadour - I would've liked TGITF to have been an adventure with the Doctor on his own, leaving Rose at home so we could see more of Reinette and her life.

Rose and Donna. I adore them both for different reasons.

Rose and the Doctor - well she was the first companion I knew, only having seen "New Who" so I think she was everything I thought a companion should be. I liked her fight, her love for the Doctor, and totally fell for her in "Dalek".

Donna and the Doctor - well it was even more special in a way, being linked from the start, the Doctor-Donna. I loved her fire, her feistiness and the fact she was the Doctor's best mate. Nothing romantic at all between them, and her genuine want for him to be happy, especially when he saw Rose again. None of the childish jealousy like with Rose and Martha.

Martha I really didn't like. I don't think Freema was right for the role of companion, I found her wooden and not very believable. There was no chemistry between her and DT, and the lovesick puppy thing was irritating, whereas I found it very believable with Rose, especially with CE.

So, Donna probably edges it for me in terms of being the best companion for the Doctor. She was older, more mature and funny, but my favourite is Rose.

Donna. Head and shoulders above the rest.

Astrid Peth...she brought somethig different to the Whovian companion. A raw edge. Sadly TPTB didn't let the viewers see much of that.

Captain Jack. I just love him as a character, I love the impact the Doctor had on him and I love his very subtle, dirty jokes. Plus I absolutely love John Barrowman!

Donna was the best companion. She brought a freshness to the companion role that the show needed.

Rose in the first series and also Jack in the few he was in, together with Eccleston they were fantastic. That team could have travelled together for years as far as I was concerned.
But that didn't happen and I still think Rose was head and shoulders above anything Martha could contribute - not necessarily her fault but there you are.
Then Donna by a country mile for Tennant post-Rose.
At the risk of igniting the old debate, surely Astrid, Christina etc are guest stars/one-offs rather than companions (originally defined as 'travelling companions'), otherwise the list could be endless.

For me it's a tough choice. I loved Rose, Martha, and Donna all in their times with the Doctor. I think Donna might be more beloved to me because I really admire her brashness and how kind she could be to people (or non-humans) at the same time, and tried to reach out to them.

Of the companions from the specials, Wilf is definitely my favorite, and I wish I could see him traveling around with the Doctor - any of the Doctors - for a while. "Oh my Lord... she's a cactus!" and that line about the TARDIS being cleaner were instant classic quotes.

It has to be Rose for me. I actually think she was a very good companion and equally a good character i.e. Rose could be in the show but not as a companion-whereas i didn't think Martha had that quality.

Still, it's all coming to an end now, so whoever we see in the last special will be the last of.ever.

Rose for me, although Donna runs her close. I think so many had a poor opinion of what CT was going to be like for a whole season, that they were surprised when she actually turned out to be a very impressive companion!
