I'm surprised no-one's commented yet on the Doctor's throwaway reference at the start of TEOT1 that he married Queen Elizabeth I!

Nice tie in with "The Shakespeare Code" of course, but considering the furore in some quarters over the Doctor actually being seen even kissing not so long ago, I'm amazed that the fact that he has now apparently not only married, but presumably from what he said, consummated the marriage, with a human, hasn't caused more comment!

Perhaps we're all finally getting used to 21st century DW!

That clip got an advance screening on Children in Need; I think people did mention it then. I like it; it's a nice little hint at the reason for Queen Elizabeth's reaction in The Shakespeare Code without making a big thing of it.

Oh the utter disgust and moral outrage over that line was something to be believed after it aired on CIN.

It was foolish for people to ever assume the Doctor was asexual. It was just a product of what TV was like in the early days. Nine made it absolutely clear in "The Doctor Dances" that he was a sexual creature and while he may not talk about it much compared to Jack, there's an old saying that people who talk about it a lot don't actually do it that much.

It may not be a driving force in his life, and he seems to have a bit of a royalty fetish, but the Doctor Does It! It also seems that the worst way to get him into bed is to become his companion. I think he feels a certain responsibilty towards them that precludes a sexual relationship. But you only had to see his tongue-tied reaction to his reunion with Sarah Jane to know he fancied her like crazy.

It's also perfectly clear that he doesn't restrict his affections to one species or gender anymore than Jack does. Which also makes perfect sense. He's a Timelord, not a human. So for him, being involved with one of us is like one of us being involved with a sheep.

And I'm pretty sure that once people find out you're romantically involved with a sheep they don't judge you more or less harshly whether it's a male sheep or a female one.

Although as I understand it a fair percentage of New York would attest to the fact that this saying did not apply to John Barowman


And once you have admitted to Sheep you've nothing to lose moving on to cows and the rest of the farmyard.

I love that Queen Bess scene .Of course imo it can't be ruled out that the marriage was to someone other than Elizabeth -Ten could be talking about two different adventures when he said about Bess and getting married.But unless more is revealed in part two i'm just taking that scene as Ten was as relaxed and ready to face the Ood as he could be but still trying to put off the Ood's reason for summoning him just a few moments longer ..

Was also a nice way to let viewers know he had had adventures and happy times I like that .

I really don't think it matters much whether he married her or not. The important part is that her nickname no longer applies (to either of them).

Do not forget that Moffat gave us Madame Du Pompadour and River Song (As well as scripting that line above...) so anyone who thinks the Doctor is going to get any less sexual in series 5 is going to be mistaken!

I can't remember the exact episode (it might have been The Empty Child), but Nine did mention to Rose that he'd been married once.

When the show first aired, wasn't the Doctor already a grandfather? Am I missing something here? Maybe something about canonical asexual reproduction?

As for the deflowering of the queen... for me, that just points more toward the reset button.

I meant, the Doctor has already had sex (hence the granddaughter)... but I can't see the Doctor being allowed (by BBC) to alter history to the extent of his own big bang with the queen and not having it reversed (god, that would be messy).

Well during the "sexless" years many people theorized that Susan wasn't actually his granddaughter, but they said she was so as to not arouse suspicion.

The BBC allowed it, filmed it (him talking about it) and broadcast it twice - once during Children in Need and then in the show itself.

(I guess the Doctor's deflowering of Good Queen Bess happened during an edition of "Monarchs in Need.")

Elizabeth I lived to the age of 69- a pretty long life for a woman of her era. It is of course entirely possible that her nickname remained true to life throughout- in which case I pity the poor girl! That's a long time.

Should there be some almighty uproar, the 11th Doctor need only mention in passing that the Queen Bess he married was Bess the 19th of new new new new milton keynes.

And anything to break the monotony of living in new new new new Milton Keynes would be welcome (allegedly)

If we want to be in denial about it, he doesn't strictly state that he married Good Queen Bess or that the nickname he's referring to isn't "Good Queen Bess".

Me? I don't care. There are lots of people who have had sex that I consider a suitable role model for children. No, really!
