Quite a lot of recent tracks isn't there, like from the last 18months, has there been a major upturn in singles sales? 31 tracks from the past 2 years (including RATM) seems quite a lot more than I expected, I thought there had been a sharp drop in sales.

A surprise to see so many records from the early part of the decade.

I was expecting the opposite, I thought downloads had 'saved' the single from declining sales

The bold ones are the singles that weren't a charity/novelty song or a reality tv winners song.

Interesting to compare with the Billboard chart http://www.billboard.com/charts/pop-...ongs?year=2009

The US number 1 and 2 didn't even make the top 100 over here!

Billboard does include radio airplay, and online streaming as well as sales data so a direct comparison can't really be made. The UK 100 does show how much the public buys into charity singles and the Simon Cowell machine though, you don't seem to get that as much over the pond.

I think it was definately an improvement of the 90s decade chart-if I remember rightly.

It would be easy to discount the reality Cowell singles given there unfair advantages-its fair to say that without that push they would'nt have made number 1 in many cases-nevermind this chart.

I can remember the when Radio 1 did the top 80 of the 80s and that had some absolute classics in it.

Funny that Unchained Melody was the second biggest selling song 2000 - 2009 and the nineties.

Does this mean that if you discounted artists and just went by the song that Unchained Melody has been the most popular song of the last twenty years?!

The 70s, 80s, and 90s all look pretty decent. Some proper pop songs. The naughties, unsurprisingly, look cack.
