I think you have to look at the sales in context. When people bought that they didn't know that the decade was to become dominated by talent shows. Pop Idol, being the first , was such a huge phenomenon at the time that the public were sent into a buying frenzy. I think it was an amazing achievement, especially as there were no downloads in those days, but as Will himself acknowledged on the TV last night - if a song has 6 months of promotion it's bound to do well
You would think though that the Winner's singles nowadays, which are available to download often at one fifth of the price people paid for Evergreen, would sell more not less
