I don't have any sort of personal music player. If I want to listen to music I put a CD on the stereo and just listen.
Sorry

Why did page three of this thread only have one post on it? Bizarre.

Anyway, I haven't got an ipod. Just listen to CDs still. We did cave in and get an MP3/MP4 player for our boy this xmas, it's not an ipod though.

EDIT> Now all the other posts on page 4 have gone...

I originally had an ipod (well, if we're going to go original, I originally had a Walkman, but there you go...) and what ruined it for me was itunes. Bloated, unintuitive and far too restrictive.
So I went for a Creative Zen Vision M: was never happier

Then, this year, I was made redundant and so instead of listening to my Zen on the way to/from work, I found I was at home a lot more. So I thought, I'll get a dock/player for my Zen, so she can pplay away happily while I use my PC or wash up or whatever.
BAD move!
Virtually EVERY dock or player made now is "for ipod", and although you CAN use other players (like my Zen), you have to "use the tradesman's entrance", ie link via the aux/line-in, so you don't get access to a lot of the cooler features on the more expensive docks, and they usually only charge ipods.
Bah!

So, forced into it, I thought, it's been a few years since I had an ipod. Maybe they've made them better.
So I picked the dock I wanted, bought a nano and was reasonably happy with it till itunes started messing me about.
I have nevr had to fight so much with a program to get it to do what I want it to do, which is essentially let me listen to my music (not duplicates, not cut out tracks because it doesn't see them tagged, not change the volume of some and not others, etc).

So now, having spent about 400 Euro on both, I am gong back to Creative, and ordering the Zen X-Fi!

Down with ipods!
Anyway, as we saw on the Simpsons, eventually in the future they're going to turn against us and enslave us!

Don't have any technology made by Apple.

MP3 player - Creative (only really use it on long flights)
Smartphone - Blackberry

nope, have a cowon d2 16gb w/16gb sdhc card,
and a sony x1060 (32gb), hate itunes as its bloatware and unreliable, and ipods are unreliable

Never had an iPod, and won't while iTunes is compulsory. The interface on the touch/iPhone is very good but as devices they are too locked down for my needs.

I have a Creative Zen X-Fi. I love it, especially the fact you can expand the memory! I might buy myself an iPod Classic if the zen breaks in the future, but until that happens I'm sticking with it.

Iriver P7. Will never buy an ipod until Apple allow drag and drop and support more video codecs.

yeah - why would anyone want to go to the trouble of simply connecting an ipod to a computer, when they could just copy and paste everything...

that's a real time saver, right there!

There's an app. for that

I'm on my second Sansa, this time a Clip

Why? Off the top of my head:

- At 8GB, double the capacity of of the biggest Shuffle and cheaper than it too.
- You really do need a screen for that amount of music and playlists.
- FM Radio.

I have a Zune 30, a good piece of kit in its day and still decent but i'm now holding out for the 4th gen iPhone next summer.

I had a few tunes on my watch (2GB card) but rarely listen to music away from home. All my stuff is on LAN storage and played through wired devices.

Are you implying that you have to download stuff on the iPod?

If so this is completely false and you can just rip the CDs in iTunes. Your reason for not having an iPod seems a political one, personally I don't buy stuff to be different or to stick it to the man I buy stuff that just works. Besides, I have an iPhone so I don't need a separate music portable.

Further, the iTunes Store is currently all DRM-free so what is the big fuss with that? Plus why are people caught up on downloading or recording? From iTunes you are simply copying MP3 files across to the iPod disk like any normal file all the iTunes software is doing is making a database based on the ID3 tags embedded in the MP3 files to enable you to easily sort by artist, genre, album etc. There are 2 ways to copy to iPod. Firstly, simply dragging and dropping the songs manually. Secondly, and probably the best way is the sync automatically either to the whole library or a playlist if your library is larger than you iPod this way any additions or changes you make to your tracks in iTunes will automatically sync with the iPod so it is not one big mess by having differently tagged songs and different songs in iTunes and the iPod.

I admit that iTunes isn't the best software ever written but people try to overcomplicate it.

Have a Creative Zen,

I bought an iPod Nano in the summer to go on holiday with, sold it as soon as I got back. Sound quality isn't great and the thing kept crashing - also the shuffle kept playing the same songs over and over, and iTunes was awful to set up.

That said I bought a Nokia music phone when I got back, and altho its ALOT easier to get music on to the nokia the sound quality is alot worse than the iPod.

Zen sound quality wins hands down for me (I used the same headphones in all devices), glad no one wanted it on ebay now

I used to have a nano but after being subjected to the abomination that is itunes screwing everything up I now have a Sony (better quality sound and cheaper) and won't touch anything Apple while itunes has to be used.

Sansa Clip+ for me, i would rather do without than have to use itunes.

Poor(er) sound quality, restricted file formats and itunes software has stopped me ever buying an iPod. I can't see that changing in the future with all the other players that are available. I still think iPods are good devices but for my needs there are better and more cost effective options.

One thing that does annoy me is how some people refer to all players as iPods. Last week I was chatting to a new girl at work who is 21 and asked her if she had an mp3 player. She replied with a puzzled look "yeah, I've got an iPod" like she thought I was strange for saying mp3 player . I expect most younger people are like that and wouldn't consider anything other than an iPod because it's seen as the one to have.

I think it's similar to the way a lot of people call vacuum cleaners Hoovers (or at least used to).

People talk about how iTunes is awful-but when I bought a creative a few years back it loaded some awful windows explorer based stuff and would only drag and drop from there.

Also my creative suddenly refused to charge one day and overheated. Not a problem I've had with the Apple products I've bought.

I’d rather eat my own faeces than own an Apple product.

What I hate about Apple is how they forcefully push their products onto you. You want an iPod? Then you have to use Apple’s music player, iTunes. You own a Mac? Then you have to install iTunes, and even if you “uninstall” it, you are constantly bombarded with messages telling you there are new versions available to download.

I find Apple products creepy and condescending.

I also hate the way iPods are inexplicably popular and seen as “revolutionary”, despite them not being much different to any other portable music player that was around when they came out.

If I were interested in a portable music player (which I’m not) I’d buy one that supports all the most popular filetypes, and will let me use it with whatever software I choose.
