The Doctor did rebuild him though and gave him back to Sarah Jane.

Then again Caan was mad and got stuff wrong.

As I've been saying for weeks now (and being roundly ignored) Caan's prophecy was clearly in reference to the people who were with the Doctor in the Dalek ship and no one else, and extended to the current events only, not an unrelated adventure a couple of years down the road.
