Just because they are freelance at that particular time doesn't mean they have to be freelance forever.
Maybe, they get home from fighting the sontaran to find Jack on their doorstep offering them a job? Who knows! IF RTD wants them there and they want to be there I am sure they will write a way in.

To be honest I prefered Martha being with Milligan.
(Then again I think the reason why is because Mickey annoys me and I don't like it when a Character I like gets together with a Character I DON'T like! Very, VERY childish of me I know! )Ah well what's done is done, it's not up to me to decide who she ends up with, that's RTD's Job. May the 2 of them be very happy together!

The point was that the Doctor was in his "changing history for the good" mood as a final goodbye thing, and saved Martha and Mickey from being shot. This of course could have happened in say the year 2020 or whatever, just as he went back to 1995 to see Rose, therefore anything could have happened and is plausible explanation as to why Mickey and Martha are freelance alien hunters.
mm ok im SURE it was nowhere near 2020, 2. he went back to january of 2005 a few months before he and rose met, NOT 1995. he also stayed under a shadow. so she wouldn't see his face properly. |

I took that scene as Mickey just being there for Martha. I think everyone except Rose saw the Doctor's appearances as a little goodbye moment for the tenth Doctor. It never struck me that Mickey and Martha might be married.
Although I thought she was def. married to Tom Milligan, so I just assumed she must have divorced him and married Mickey. |

I don't think it was ever confirmed that Martha and Tom had got married. It was mentioned that they were engaged a few times, and in CoE Jack or Gwen mentioned that Martha was on her honeymoon and that was all we heard. They didn't say who she married, so presumably it was Mickey.

Maybe poor Tom got exterminated by the Daleks or otherwise died in one of the many Earthbound crises the Earth has suffered.
Or that him being a Doctor and her off everywhere for UNIT meant their schedules were just incompatible, nothing personal to them, they just couldn't have the time for one another. (I'm sure the irony would not be lost on Martha, from loving one guy with too MUCH time to one with to little )

True
Expect "Smith and Jones - Alien investigators" coming to BBC3 at some point. Would also be a nice touch for one of the episodes to be based around sontarans and include this scene again ![]() Still, really really doubt that would ever happen. ![]() Mrs and Mr Smith Edit: I meant Dr. and Mr. Smith |

I actually posted that this would happen over a year ago, however i cant find the post.
It was unfortunately obvious that in TV world, that 2 Black characters, no matter how little they actually know each other, will probably be slung together in order to tie things up. It's kind of the default in most programmes that Black people will end up with the other Black main character. |

I heard someone else make this observation when it was first rumoured and I have to say I disagree when it comes to British t.v. at least. I know US tv has a tendency to only pair black characters up with others due to a whole section of America who jsut don't like the idea but I don't think DW is guilty of that. Look at Donna! That's two black men she's fallen for and tried to marry! |

I don't really see a problem pairing them together. It was actually nice to see that out of the companions of this era, a couple of them ended up together. There weren't really many other pairings you could have done either.
I do have a feeling that it was maybe an idea thrown together just to give Mickey a big enough place in that series of farewells. Couldn't have seen the Doctor tracking him down on his own, seems more reasonable if he's tagged to a bigger character. Was slightly distracted by Noel Clarke's "tough guy" act in that final scene though - he's done it before to an extent, but he really did look he was filling his pants between lines. |

I think they should ditch Torchwood now they've killed everyone off (practically) and blew up the hub, and give Mickey and Martha a spin-off

Although ironically I'm sure he said that after "Journey's End" too! Nice that he knows what the show is called - Dr Who indeed!

Luckily, Who doesn't exactly have to worry about being believable and I'll leave you to make up your own jokes about not being able to alienate an audience that watches a show with an alien as the eponymous character ![]() Seriously, I thought the Martha and Mickey pairing was less about race and more about the irony/coincidence of the two characters that were effectively rejected by the Doctor and Rose respectively ending up finally finding happiness with one another. But I do agree that Martha should have stuck with Tom

Until this episode the only black/black pairing I can think of is the older couple in Planet of the Dead. |

It was the only pairing they could put together, and it was a nice little touch at the end. And Martha was credited as Martha Smith-Jones... Take a look at the credits on iPlayer. Link starts at the credits: http://bbc.co.uk/i/pk7ls/ Oh and I think Torchwood will be returning with Alonso Frame in tow... |
