*waves a little Eccleston flag*

Haven't seen a lot of the old ones, mind you. And I must watch the film, some time.

I thought tonight's was great, anyway. And I bet all the people who bitch about RTD will be bitching about Moffat within 6 months.

If so, then, to my mind, it's a dead heat between Pyramids of Mars and Genesis of the Daleks.”

Genesis of the Daleks is over-rated and full of padding (god, I sound like some weird fan but I just remember it). Pyramids of Mars is a classic though. The Caves of Androzani is very good.

If my memory serves me correctly there has been no mention of the 13 lives thing in the revived series so far, maybe it'll be ignored?

In any case, I'm sure they'll find a way around it if Doctor Who is as popular in the 13th Doctor's era as it is now.

David Tennant by miles, then Jon Pertwee.

I found Christopher Eccleston unwatchable as the Dr.

Peter Davison
Christopher Eccleston
Patrick Troughton
Colin Baker
William Hartnell (only because he is pre my viewing)
Sylvester McCoy (he killed Who)

Matt Smith....To Be Rated.

K9 returned to SJ premanently in this years series and was a (semi) regular - would have loved to see him with her tonight !

My favourite is David Tennant.

I started out watching it with Tom Baker, though I used to actually be too scared to enjoy it

Before the new Who, Tom Baker was 'my Doctor', followed by Peter Davison.

But now it's David Tennant. All the way. Very sad to see him move on.

1.Tom Baker
2.Eccleston
3.Tennant

Had Eccleston have done it for longer he may even have made #1 on my list.

TB was doctor when i was a kid btw.

Sadly they flogged the k9 rights off to a US series and he wasn't able to appear very often after that (apparently)

Best Doctor for the 20th century, Tom Baker.
Best for the 21st century, Chris Eccleston.
With respect to the others, all of which had their plus points, both by a mile.

Personally I don't think you can compare the new Dr who with the older version, two completely different programs broadcast in completely different eras.

I think I've watched every episode from both.

With regards to the later ones, I think that both David and Chris are as good as one another.

I think the ladies obviously have a crush on David which leads to him getting more praise than he deserves, or to put it another way, the episodes with Chris in were just as good (and in some cases a lot better).

I appreciate everyone has their own opinions on things but I do find it very hard to comprehend the amount of good praise I've seen regarding the 2 part final.

It was dire in my (and my Dr Who loving families) opinion. Again, I feel that the vast majority giving it praise are the ones with a crush on David, and I'm convinced that whatever he had done, they would have praised it regardless?

I also watched the 2 parter with Rose, the Darleks and the Cyber men yesterday. In my opinion that was about 10000000 times better than last nights attempt, last nights final wasn't even anywhere near in the same league.

A bit like watching a new series of the Simpsons and comparing it from one of the earlier season 3/4 ones, no comparison.

Part one was dragged out and padded beyond belief, the first half was mind numbingly slow.

Part two just seemed to be hashed together, the ending (again appealing to the ladies but not any other Dr Who fan) was just sentimental clap trap and if it wasn't for me and my son wanting to see the regeneration, I would have honestly switched it off when he started saying his good byes.

I appreciate Tennant doesn't write the stuff, but if I was him, i would not be at all pleased with my last outing.

These 'best of' polls are very flawed because people in general tend to vote in favour of the most recent or current Doctor.

I think that you have to wait a few years to get a better handle on how any Doctors stand in context with the others.

For example a poll could be done later on in the year and Matt Smith could well top the poll because he's the Doctor in the forefront of most people's minds.
That happened with both Eccleston and Tennant respectively.

I still think that Tom Baker stands out above all others as the definitive Doctor.

I think that Chris Eccleston was great, and David Tennant had his moments.
I think that Eccleston shades it over Tennant, but I think he needed to do more.

But then again I see people look back in hindsight and sing the praises of Patrick Troughton. Having seen some Troughton recently It's hard for me to argue with them.

That's the problem with voting for the 'best'. I don't think that you can really do it unless you've seen them all and most of their episodes. Even then you're always going to have your opinion corrupted by the zeitgeist and the hype of the present.

There was a similar thread recently that had a poll. I posted in it but can't find it now.

I shall wave another Eccleston flag too but a huge one! I think that people have forgotten how much work series 1 had to do. DW shuffled off years before in a very sorry state and without the quality of Eccleston's acting, I wonder if DW would've made series 2 at all.

Well I enjoyed the episodes, and David Tennant is very good on Breakfast Time or whatever.

The best Dr's have been for me in this order

1. Tom Baker
2. Christopher Eccleston
3. Peter Davison
4. Jon Pertwee
5. David Tennant (far to camp really to get into top 4 but not a really bad doctor)
6. Patrick Troughton
7. William Hartnell (only got old clips to go by)
8. Paul McGann (was only in teh movie but better than them below)
9. Colin Baker
10. Sylvester McCoy (I agree with the other poster that he killed off Dr Who)

Matt Smith....unknown at mo

Jon Pertwee was the first Doctor I ever saw, but, DT is my favourite, probably followed by Jon or Tom as I loved them as a child.
