This is bugging me - What tune is this ?
I started an earlier thread about Steeleye Span, who I'd not heard of before and they've done this song but used a dead old tune I recognise as a kid from school but I just can't get it... anyone know what it is ?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsjgaGPU-PY Its not a great song, unlike some of Steeleye Spans stuff I've found, and the recording on youtube is well dodgy but hopefully you'll be able to tell me... |

Sounds like the old hymn "To be a Pilgrim" to me in parts.

Yes sounds like that to me too.
Found this http://www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de...strangers.html This song is a tragic military montage of three songs segued together against layers of percussive over-dubbing. The results were both experimental and exciting. The chorus is from Our Captain Cried All Hands, which can be found e.g. on Martin Carthy's album Byker Hill. |

It's very very common in traditional and folk music for familiar melodies to be used for many different songs; Bob Dylan was a great adaptor of traditional tunes on many of his earliest songs, for example.
I'd not heard this Steeleye Span track before, but I really like it. I find the drum machine irritating, though. |

I've just discovered Steeleye Span.. this isnt one of my favourites, its not 'driving' enough and you're right about the drums.
You know if Steeleye Span used other tunes, or if anyone else used any of theirs ?.. the start and end of Long Lankin seem dead familiar too |
