What was your exact reaction as The Doctor regenerated?

My exact reaction? Well, firstly I thought the actual change from one actor to the other wasn't handled as well as The Master (Derek Jacobi to John Simm) - the effect of the transformation wasn't as good. Also, when 11 said "I'm a girl" I thought "that'll start off the 'The Doctor could be a female' lot again".

On a more approriate note to the thread, I was actually grateful the regeneration arrived before I got too old myself. They didn't half drag it out this time didn't they?

I was blubbing from about 7.35 and for most of his extended farewells... and his "I don't want to go' proper done me in.

And then Matt popped up and I was grinning like a loon.

Say what ya like about the show, it gets to ya. In a good way.

Nicely done.

Can't help wishing the role of the new Dr had gone to John Simm.

"At last!", then, "thank goodness Moffat and Smith are doing the next series instead"

I think it was a bad choice for his last line to be: “I don’t wanna go”.

It was a bit too upsetting, and we don’t feel as though he is “at peace”, as it were.

Matthew Smith had a great entrance, and it all seems incredibly exciting. The whole episode was really exciting. I can’t wait for series 5.

Like others, I feel cheated out of a “twist”. There was a nice little twist with Wilf knocking 4 times and the Doctor having to sacrifice himself for Wilf, but I really thought there would be more of a twist at the end.

The bit where they played Rose’s theme, with that mysterious woman, was odd. I thought that was going to lead to something.

I don't think so. I think it was just the remnants of DT's Doctor lingering. Remember, DT was nowhere near as excitable after his regeneration from CE (a very calm comment on teeth followed by 'Where was I - ah yes, Barcelona' IIRC) - but then CE's Doctor was very much a controlled, unexcitable character compared to DT's Doctor.

I think MS's Doctor will start having it's own character from the start of next series.

I do wonder why he travelled in the TARDIS when he knew he was regenerating and therefore would be out of action for a moment...surely he'd wait, allow himself to change, then travel when he was back in control?

And good God - talk about dragged out!

I do agree with this, but I can't help wondering if that isn't due to the fact that Matt has quite a unique kind of face.....so it wasn't possible to make it look that smooth.

It didn't really bother me, though, as overall I felt the regeneration scene was very well played on both sides.

I am sad to see David Tennant leave, he was kind of the reason why I got into watching Dr Who until I found I liked the show regardless of who was the Doctor. Anyway, I tried hard not to cry. All the time I was saying to myself 'it's a TV show, he's not dead, the character is regenerating as it has done all the time'.

Then he said 'I don't want to go' and that was it. I was a gibbering wreck.

But, honestly I did get a tad fed up of Tennant when the Russell T. Davis museum tour kicked in, paying homage to JJ Abrams Star Trek Bar. By the time the regeneration started, I was excited to see 10 go and evaluate what 11 would be like. The verdict, overwhelmingly in our house was that Matt Smith seems a good enough choice, but he just imitated DT the way that DT imitated Eccleston. Having watched the trailer for the new series, I'm optimistic about Matt Smith but he's got one hell of an act to follow.

I was just saying that today! I'd have been a much happier bunny if DT had been replaced by him

My first thought as we saw the regeneration energy start to appear- FINALLY! Has any other regeneration been quite that dragged out? 7 was technically dead and in the morgue before he became 8, and it still didn't seem to take anywhere near as long. It's a shame it was so dragged out as that ruined any emotional impact as far as I'm concerned.

Followed by- what pathetic last words. You wimp, 9 faced it far better than that (come to think of it, so did all the others I think). Yes, I get it, he likes who he is and doesn't want to change, but the time has come, face up to it. Oh and that doesn't end with n! And it's still dragging on, and on.....

Thank goodness for that, full on regeneration at last. Is there any time left to see the new Doctor?

Why is the Tardis being destroyed? I'm sure regenerations don't usually do that?

That wasn't a very smooth transition.

Wooo, new Doctor!

He's manic like the last Doctor. I hope it's temporary, want to see something different. Presume this is post regeneration madness and won't last.

When does the next series start?

At least if I remember correctly that's exactly what I thought

I thought that it just took too long, to the point that I thought the final twist was that time had ended after all.

The problem I have found with RTD in general is that he milks the udders then goes back and milks them again, and again, and again until you just feel like screaming "put the cow out of its misery and turn it into a beefburger".

I thought when he hit the deck after jumping out of the space ship that seemed to have been stolen from the Red Dwarf set that that would trigger the regeneration. No-one could have survived that, and it just for me summed up the cartoonishness that the new series has brought into the Whoniverse.

“When you were seeing David for the last second, how was you feeling? I know that I actually had some tears in my eyes because DT was a truly amazing doctor and when he said "I don't wanna go" I truly felt sad by the exit taking place.

Matt looks promising too though, I want to add”

It was very sad but nowhere on the same level as the death of madame du pompoduar The end of the second part of the WWII one with the gas masks, Or fathers day, or the waters of mars., some sort of companion should have been there so we could have felt the emotions of the companion seeing him rengenerate although saying that now makes me sad he regenerated alone.

I felt they did a very good job of making matt smith sound like david tennant.

You're all saying that MS is acting like DT's Doctor. Perhaps because it's immediately after the regeneration and a particularly emotional one for the Doctor, part of his personal is lingering for a few extra moments.

Looking at the trailer for MS's Doctor, he's nothing like 10. More fighty!

I know that I just thought they did the transitional period very well which I hope continues into the next series.

I do hope "Geronimo" isn't going to be MS' equivalent of CE's "Fantastic" or DT's "Brilliant".

That could REALLY grate!

Couldn't agree more.

There's always a risk of a new Doctor spoiling the show for some viewers that have preferred DT and CE but it's only fair to give him a chance, my expectation for MS aren't that high though.

Didn't feel much, really. The episode was pretty poor as a whole so was probably annoyed at that stage.

Doomsday was at least 100 times as sad, in my opinion.

I was shouting in my head don't go. I was hoping it was all just a joke, but no I don't think anyone knows whether matt smith will be good or bad, we'll just have to wait.

As DT faded I was very happy and I thought ......AT LAST, hes gone

When Matt Smith started acting like a demented clone of DT I thought ...OH CRAPOLA

it was a homage to the cantina sequence in star wars ..
the laser blasting spaceship sequence was a homage to the luke and han sequence in star wars Millennium falcon VS Tie fighters

Plus RTD couldn't help put in his last plug for the glories of shall we say "male bonding" in that scene.Putrid.

My thoughts on the 25 min good bye was of course it was too long but also from Tennants point of view in that as an actor he must have been thinking on location shooting "OH God am I still shooting this goodbye sequence"
