encouraging people to watch doctor who - prerequisite viewing?

Just been talking to a mate who always took the mickey out of me for watching a "kids programme", despite my argument that the Simpson's is a "kid's programme" and yet he watches that.

He's into shows like Lost, so you'd think he might be able to suspend belief a little and watch a show like Dr Who. I started citing some great examples, starting with the usual suspects like Blink, Turn Left, Midnight, but then realised, part of Turn Left's appeal is that you are familiar with older stories.

Thinking back, there are other episodes that have prerequisite viewing in order to enjoy the episode just that little bit more. Sometimes in subtle ways, other times in big ways that really have a bearing on your understanding.

Might be nice to try to list some episodes and what episodes they reference. Initially I'm thinking more about Nu Who, but I guess references to classic episodes might be worthwhile noting as well?

One example off the top of my head is when the Doctor dons a gas mask and asks, "are you my mummy?". Another example might be an episode which introduces a character that has been seen previously.

Actually I think wikipedia's entries probably list all these kind of references, but I wonder if there's one page with a list like this, rather than revisiting every episode.

Well obviously The End Of Time as we have the flashback to the series 3 finale and also The Waters of Mars for the pompeii reference along with the other 2 specials referring back to 10 losing donna
