I still think they should have let Davros kill her at the end of the last series (and escape..while laughing maniacally ).

Would have been a great way of setting him up as a major villain for future series..

If there was one thing I did like about that awful drawn-out farewells bit, it was that I took it as a strong indication that none of these characters would be seen on Doctor Who again. Don't get me wrong; I've nothing against any of them. They were good companions, but their time is gone. Let's remember them fondly, but move on.

Davros doesn't need to do anything to Donna to be a major villain. He's been one since his first appearance 35 years ago.

Sure, she wouldnt be the person she developed into after travelling the stars ..............(how could she be?) .....but how do we know she wouldnt develop into something more than "a gibbering idiot or pig" with a husband who loves her, money, new found respect from her mother (who treated her pretty badly before), maybe children?

If you look at the episode where she did marry Lee McAvoy and had children.......she changed into a mature woman who lived more than a pig with a new trough i reckon.

and that was without the doctor in her life/memory”

Totally agree with this!

For all we know, when Donna does finally die she may actualy regenerate. Perhaps the Doctor was simply ensuring that Donna got the benefit of a proper human life before she becomes a full on Timelady.

There are a lot of things that went unanswered in the final, but this is a good thing as it gives so much potential for future stories to be told.”

Ooooh like the sound of this!!

But think this is true too

I like this idea very much!

I think giving her the lottery ticket allows her to relax a bit and open her mind to more possibilities (traveling, reading, etc.) and help her grow as a person and enjoy life.

Like some posters above, I also got the feeling that Donna's story isn't finished, although I think any visits from older characters should wait until after series 5.

Spoiler
(I know about River Song, and I'm not thrilled, but I'll live, especially as I think it's completely fair that SM should bring her back once he's in charge.)

I was also gutted by this ending for Donna.
As much as I would like to see her story develop I doubt it will happen anytime soon, if ever.

I can remember River Song saying she had no idea who Donna was when they met in the library so I feel she will just fade away.

that is just so sad.

and I agree about Donna's ending, it left me feeling empty rather than happy for her. And i love to think that woman was (somehow) Donna but being his mother is more likely.

And although I doubt it'll happen-I'd love SM to one day bring Donna back for a story or two.

It's been a while since I saw that episode, but I remember interpreting River Song's reaction at the time as not so much a 'never heard of you' thing, but more of a 'oh, right, donna, uh oh, something awful's going to happen to you and i know it but you don't know it and he doesn't know it, but when i meet him in his future he will tell me about it and it truly is a tragedy, and you have my sympathy even though you don't know why yet' sort of thing (if that makes sense?).

I don't remember her saying she had no idea who she was.

f I am right, could be that River knows what happens to Donna at the end of series 4, and considers that to be the great tragedy - to lose all your wonderful memories of a wonderful time with a wonderful person?

Yep, I think you're right on that one, my bad.

I alway thought that Donna's memories could have returned and the Doctor sacrificed himself/regenerated to save her

but that wasn't to be

anyway I like that Donna's ending wasn't perfect, as it's too simplistic to have everything wrap up nicely. Anyway she'll be rich thanks to the Doctor (and her dad - that bit made me cry a bit when I watched the repeat)

I wish she didn't have that safety mechanism defence thing, if she has that why is it so important she doesn't remember, because clearly she did remember things and its done no damage. Earth is going to keep getting attacked by aliens (this is doctor who thats what happens at least once a series in the new run) so she's going to keep having these moments. When it first happened I thought it was more the Doctor she needed to forget about, but once it was clear she didn't even need to see the Doctor to start remembering things it became a bit silly.

This potentially could happen to her everytime she sees aliens that have some connection to what she saw in the past, and god forbid if she ever sees a Dalek again or Davros it probably wont end well at all.

(Apolgies if I've mucked up the quote thing - I've never used it before!)

It is a nice idea, but I think from what 10.5 said about only having one heart, and therefore not being able to regenerate, the chances of that are nil. I also think the chances of a return in the future are also nil. That, unfortunately, is why I think Donna shouldn't have been in these episodes - it detracted from her fate at the end of Journey's End.
