Any chance they'll scrap the orchestral version that's been kicking around since the revamp and go back to having it on synths?

The William Hartnell-era recording sounded more modern and better-suited to a sci-fi series than the naff one that's been used so far since it came back.

I am definately anticipating a change to the theme tune. I wonder if they'll release it before it airs for the first time in Spring.

Well they may tweak it but I doubt that it will be radically different to what we have now even if Murray Gold doesn't stay !

Shame, not liked the strings on it since day 1.

I am amazed they don't use the original one.
That recording was a breakthrough for music/sound recordings and led to a lot of the techniques associated with modern music (like sampling and synths etc.).
I find the new version to be lacking in the drama and eeriness of the original.
As OP says, not really very fitting for a sci fi show.

I'll write the theme tune, sing the theme tune

In regards to the music, anyone notice the shift in style as soon as Matt came into it, shifted from orchestral style to sort of Rock styled Film Score with reprise of the Orchestra coming into it. If that's still Murray Gold then I hope he keeps this style as most of the past two parter the music seems to be very varied mixing a lot of odd styles and going for a lot of "fun" and "wacky" beats in certain scenes.

I love the theme which has been used since 2005 - I listen to the themes from Classic Who and they leave me cold.

Quite. The arrogance in changing one of the most famous and unique compositions and arrangements in the history of music is staggering. All about marking your territory IMO for both producer and composer. It cannot be bested, by anyone ever so why they can’t admit that speaks volumes.

Did they learn nothing from the abomination that JNT foisted onto the nation?

The synth version did evolve over the years though but the essential elements remained.

The strings destroy it.

Agreed Revenga. The current theme has an exciting air about it. I hope they don't change it too much.

I didn't mind the 2005 version.. the best since the Troughton/Pertwee/Baker version...

But the bloated version they use now needs stripped back. It's got about another 14 overdubs since 2005!!

Any thing's possible, its going to be like a totally new show. New titles, new tardis, new doctor, new companion....so a new theme arrangement I think is likely.

Get the feeling that a line had been drawen under the old companions and we woun't see then again. bit sad

I think they are the only ones that have opening to come back. The rest are living happy lives, they can be lefted alone now.

Too radical. I always liked "A Forest" by the Cure, that sounds like the Dr Who theme as well!
PR.

I like the current theme, I'm expecting a change but hope the don't drop the orchestra or the classic synth noise!

Originally it was supposed to be a mix between the synth of the past and the orchestra but in series 2 they quickly dropped that in favour of mainly the orchestra part of the recording.

The version used from Voyage of the Damned---Series 4 has definitely been my favourite of the new series though, much stronger and heavier baseline and overall more punchy.

Though it's a toss up between that and the 80s Davidson era version as to which is my absolute favourite,...

But yes, new Doctor, new theme, it is bound to happen

You have no basis whatsoever for making the nonsensical and utterly untrue claim that it's the theme tune.

When Cathrine Tate heard that song on Nevermind the Buzzcocks, she thought it was the Doctor Who theme...

When people make statements without any indication that they're joking, and I've just read another thread from them with an equally silly theory about the Timelords, yes, I think they're serious.

Sense of humour bypass.

If something sounds preposterous, then it usually is.
