Remember that woman who knew the Doctor's real name?

The one from the library episodes? Was it ever explained who she was? I was hoping these final episodes with Tennant would have sorted that out.

Yes, you mean River Song. As Oreo says, wait for the next series...

River Song was a Moffatt character, and as Moffatt is leading the next series, he'll be using the character a lot more.

A lot of people seem to have fallen into the trap of thinking River Song's doctor was Doc 10, but the dialogue was always ambiguous. It could be interpreted as being Doc 10, but it could just as easily be interpreted as her falling in love with Doc 12 or 13.

Even in the next series where she returns, that doesn't necessarily mean she falls in love with Matt Smith's doctor - she met doc 11 before doc 10 in her lifetime, that's for sure, but she is either travelling through time still, and has met doc 12 or 13 already, or this is the first time she meets the doctor and treats him based on his appearance as a young man, and doesn't realise how old or wise he really is.

Funny how she recognised him as the 10th though, given that they don't meet until the 11th, and actually expected him to recognise her in return. It suggests to me that visual appearance is a very minor part of recognition for her, which makes me wonder just what her species is.

Was her ancestor sealed away from a radiation leak for 3 million years of evolution, and now she's known as "The Dog"?

Who says she "recognised" him? She calls for the doctor to meet her on a planet, she turns up, there is a man and a woman there. Chances of the man being anyone other than the doctor in one of his incarnations, given that she's familiar with the concept of regenerations and may have met more than one of his future incarnations?

It's quite easy to assume that she just assumed she was meeting an incarnation she'd not met before, and was trying to figure out which one it was, so that she could work out where they were in their relationship in relation to their timeline.

My current feeling is that she meets doc 11 first, falls in love with doc 12, who will be "older",assumes DT is Doc 13, but realises eventually that he's younger than ever, meaning doc 10.

”

She may have met several future Doctors for all we know, so is used to him looking different. Didn't she say DT looked younger, so presumably, she can't be referring to Matt Smith as the last time she saw him.

Also, she sent him the message to come to the library on the psychic paper, so she knew it would be him regardless of how he looked.

Maybe she just means younger in terms of the regenerations.

Maybe she owns a copy of the "Journal of impossible things"

I agree with Fairypenny though, I assumed at the time that she was talking about regenerations.

I would have prefered it to have been with Tennant but oh well

Bear in mind Matt Smith hadn't been cast yet at the time and they originally wanted an older actor.

wasn't she talking about his eyes looking younger
as if he's got many experiences left before he becomes the person she knew?
if that's the case his physical manifestation is irrelevant

If she meant younger in terms of regenerations, wouldn't she then realise right there that this Doctor had never met her before?

I don't really remember what she said to him, so I'm sure you're right!

My recollection is that the dialogue makes it clear that only by taking an opportunity to look at him properly is River Song able to spot how young he looks. So it's credible that she sends for the Doctor, a many turns up doing Doctorish things and since she's used to men she doesn't directly recognise turning up and being Doctorish she concerns herself with the immediate situation until they get a quietish moment later on.

Don't know though, it could be that I've adjusted the scene mentally to fit the outcome I wanted.
