oh come on, the poor fella has had about 2 minutes of air time and already he's a rubbish doctor, how many of us said the same about Catherine Tate, to be honest I thought her performance in The Runaway Bride was a bit naff, but then came Parteners in Crime, and she turned out to be one of the best companions the current run had. Give Mr Smith a break, he has some very big shoes to fill and and an army of nay sayers ripping in to him before he'd even started filming. we can all say this bloke would have been better, or I wish that bloke had been cast. If wishes were horses, we'd all be eating steak!

I loved DT as the Doctor just as much as the next person

But the final 30 seconds or so of Matt impressed and got me excited for the new series... how anyone can say things like "im not watching no more"... or "im not impressed by him" is just angry Tennant fans backlashing against the show.

Doctor Who is bigger than any actor/writer... and will continue to be brilliant (IMO).

As for 'being too similar to Tennant'... I didnt particularly see it myself, but bear in mind that he's just regenerated, it wouldve been Matt's first ever scene as the Doctor so wouldnt have a proper grasp of how "his Doctor" will behave...

Exactly, he's barely been given a chance to show us what he's got at the moment yet people are slagging him off already. I say cut him some slack, if anything I have high hopes for him.

That was my exact reaction... when DT started. The craziness of the post regeneration isn't really an indication of the character that he will become.

I LOVE David Tennant and I admit I'm really upset that he's gone now!

But saying that Matt Smith (IMO) didn't seem too bad actually!

Looking forward to see what he brings to the role.

Yes, in retrospect DT's post-regeneration scene wasn't a great indicator of what was to come, now most of us are sad to see him go.

I wasn't impressed by 5 minute sequence. Although I thought he looked good in the trailer on BBC3. Although he does seem to go round punching people, which seems a bit unusual for a Dr.

I refer m'learned friend to the William Hartnell/Patrick Troughton/John Pertwee incarnations of Dr Who where punches-a-plenty were thrown.

John Pertwee's Doctor was down right vicious at times!

Poor old Benton! Face down on the floor!

Exactly.

Its high time this The-Doctor-as-a-pacifist-nonsense was put to bed.

He's a killer.

I expect because such people are, when it really comes down to it, fans of David Tennant's Doctor Who as you say and not really fans of Doctor Who. At the very least, they haven't truly bought into the fact that part of the excitement of the show is that the lead actor changes and normally gives the show a lease of new life.

Ahhhh, ok, fair enough.

Bringing back an old tradition, maybe then, Mr Moffat be.

Sigh. The Doctor post regeneration is always erratic, carrying parts of his previous incarnation with him still, and not settling down straight away.

It was also an incredibly violent regeneration too. Certainly wasn't anything to be worried about, when you see the trailer for Season 5 you'll see he is going to do an amazing job.

They are trying to inject a bit more of an older feel to the show I think. I know that sounds stupid with a young, young cast leading it now, but they obviously are taking the first three doctors as part of the influence on the new show.

I seem to remember that this very forum resonated with cries of, 'Oh no, not David Tennant!' when it was announced that he would take over from Christopher Ecclestone. He had just appeared as Casanova after all. I wonder whether the same people are now screaming, 'Oh no, not Matt Smith!' largely because he appeared as a rather gormless Victorian private eye in those Philip Pullman things (the titles of which now escape me) alongside Billie Piper.

I couldn't see anything wrong with his acting in his one short scene and he looked good in the teaser trailers as well - although both were much too short to come to any sort of definite conclusion. We'll have to wait for the new series for that. At least it shouldn't be too long a wait - and we have the best writer in charge now. I just hope he's as good an executive as he is a scribe. One thing that so many Russell T. Davies detractors seem to forget is that it was he who resurrected Doctor Who and turned it into a world-wide smash hit. I agree that his writing was variable (although, at best, it was very good), but his achievement speaks for itself.

Doctor Who is a smash hit in the UK.

It is on television in about 40 countries, but by no stretch of the imagination is it a smash hit in most of them. In most it's an cult show aimed at an adult audience seen on small cable stations.

I can't judge him on what he's going to be like, but from what I saw of him just then I felt that the sense of humour wasn't different enough from the Tennant Doctor.

I could imagine Tennant having exactly the same lines and acting them in exactly the same manner as Matt Smith did.

That is actually understating the point. Doctor Who isn't a smash hit ANYWHERE outside the UK.

And that is not a shame on DW. It is difficult for any series to even be a smash hit in its own country. If it can attract some kind of audience in a lot of foreign countries, in addition to being a big hit in its own, that is accomplishment enough.

Worse that can happen?
He only does one series..and they get someone else.

IMO that isnt going to happen the day DW becomes about one actor the day the format is over..

DT was a good choice he drew in loads of fans.

I firmly belive as long as the stories are good people will give MS a chance in the role.

the Beeb are making a small fortune off this show theres no way in hell they are going to allow another 1980's type situation again.

He is going to be great, come on you know he will, just a few episodes and sadly DT will be a wonderful distant memory|!|

I couldn't believe my eyes when I watched because I could swear he spat on the tardis console...

So I watched the last 5 mins on iPlayer again last night and yes he does spit on the tardis.

He's supposed to be the Doctor not a football player.

I suppose I'm not that bothered but I can't see kids warming to him if they are making the Doc more of a tough nut... after all we saw him punch someone on the trailer and also didn't he use a gun in the trailer?

we saw Ten using a gun last night!

and Pertwee used to smack people around like no ones business.

Well he didn't come across to me as anything like a "tough nut" at all. I don't think he actually spat on the Tardis purposefully either. I loved his first scene. Very manic and a bit crackers, but after watching the excellent trailer I have no doubts whatsoever. He's going to make a brilliant, brilliant Doctor, and his first series is going to be the best telly of 2010.

Do we know if there'll still be a Christmas special? I really hope so...

yes, the trailer was very impressive I thought, and yes there will be Christmas specials still. I believe Moffat is writing it.

OK, stop now with all the Ageist comments.

So what if he's 27. I'd rather have a 27 year old paying the role who is a great atcor, than a sh*t actor who's in his 30s, 40s or 50s

IIRC immediatly after regeneration the "new" doctor still show characteristics of the "old" doctor and it takes a little while for the full regeneration (looks, personality, etc.) to be complete.
