His 2 minutes were over acted, but perhaps that is what SM wanted? a manic, crazy, over the top Doctor?
DT seems positively sublime compared, his entrance was understated , as that is what RTD wanted I presume.

That two minutes was down to SM, not MS.

That "overacting" thing really gets boring, everyone always says it, well, considering most people say it after a Regeneration, maybe that's the clue? After a Regeneration they go a bit crazy, DT did, MS has, JS was hyper after the regeneration too, then followed by the crash, like PD, DT, and if we are to believe that filming footage, MS will do to.

But DT didn't go crazy after regeneration. As I remember he stood there feeling his teeth with his tongue saying, 'That's strange, new teeth.'

Totally cool as a cucumber. Nothing manic about it as far as I remember. Slight bit of humour but nothing silly or over the top like I witnessed in Matt Smith's first scene. Sorry but have this terrible feeling it's gonna be stupid and he's gonna grate on me like fingers down a blackboard.

I can't help but think this new Doctor is going down the Sarah Jane route. It's like they're making a new spin-off series, 'The Young Dr Who.' aimed at the kids.

We have to give the new guy a chance. I didn't warm to DT till the 3rd or 4th episode. I am a Dr Who fan not an "Actor who is playing Dr Who fan". So for me as long as the series doesn't go too childish and the doctor has his serious moody moments as well as his hyper camp moments I think MS will do fine. Like it has been said previously, it's the writing that makes Dr Who not the Guy playing it.

Not sure I'm keen on the "Geronimo" catch phrase he has already uttered twice though!

Take what he said in the trailer literally - trust him, he is the Doctor.

Tennants opening scenes as the Doctor in the Christmas special were awful, when he fell out of the TARDIS and Mickey and Jackie caught him. And he turned out okay.

i could not stand DT when he first came along, convinced that after eccleston it was all downhill, and how i was proved wrong. It took me half the next series to warm to tennant, but he made the role his own and was superb. But, hopefully i am not alone in this, i think it was time for a change, certain aspects of tennant were starting to grate and a new writing team and update is what is needed to keep the show fresh, i was gutted when tennant said he was going, but (while have the odd tear) i did think the last 20 mins of his last show was a bit drawn out in giving him a good send off.

After seeing MS in his post regen scene i was immediately taken by him and his apparent sense of fun... (whats was i doing again, oh yes CRASHING), i have watched who since the 70's and feel the show can only get stronger with good writing, and with moffatt on board i now see in smith what he saw, a little twinkle in his eye, the trailer looked great and i am really looking forward to the new series. And i refuse to jump on a bandwagon of people who just nay say the death knell of the series since tennant has gone..... he is the 10th actor to play him and i am sure there will be many more.... who is to say that smith will not be better than him, we don't know, but i will certainly give him a chance. i think RTD has done a good job in re-inventing the series, but this timely update will keep the show going for a lot longer i am sure, i have total faith in SM and the strength of his writing will shine through.

But you still can't base his future performance on that. The Tardis was exploding around him, so overacting is kind of expected.

I would have preffered Paterson Joseph to be the new doctor but i'm not writing Matt Smith off just yet. I was shocked when Confidential revealed him to be the doc because it was the least obvious choice they could have gone for. The docs always been odd in some way. I like Matt Smiths quirky looks to be honest. the acting i saw in the last few minutes was hard to judge.

I loved those opening scenes. I want a freshly-regenerated Doctor to be manic and confused and crazy and rambling.

And I loved Matt's opening scene as well. Couldn't have wished for anything better. Certainly don't expect him to be like that all the time, but for me it was spot on for a regeneration scene.

I didnt, I just said that the 2 minutes were overacted, probably on SMs orders.

what i don't get is why some fans of the show still haven't grasped the Doctor is often a bit manic after a regeneration - it's happened often enough by now, but we still get the same comments from some people every time it happens!

Often? Try 'always'. He's been erratic for an episode or two (or four) after every regeneration from 1966 onwards. It's accepted that you don't really get a feel for what a new Doctor's personality is going to be like until after his first story.

Yes, your right, I was just covering myself in case someone tried to nitpick what I said by arguing 'such and such' didn't, if you know what i mean...

I get the feeling a lot of people are judging Matt Smith simply because he isn't David Tennant. Matt Smith is a good actor so I've no doubt he'll do a fine job.

I have concerns about his age, not because he's young but because he looks young. It'll be a very different dynamic to the character but I'm interested to see how that plays out.
