If that was the case, he wouldn't have been cast. You are assuming young kids are that concerned about looks. They are quite capable of understanding that this man isn't human, that he's a 900 year old eccentric alien, how he looks and dresses is irrelevant.
That's like saying 3 year olds won't watch CBeebies because one of the presenters has no arm, because they can't identify with a disabled person.
