Did anybody else think that DT morphing into MS was bad?

When CE went into DT and the Yana master went into the Saxon master, you could see them gradually morphing from one person to another.

But tonight, it just seemed that one second it was DT and the other he was just MS without any morphing taking place.

Yes - it wasn't a morph, just a dissolve from one to the other. Maybe they blew the effects budget.

(Really, couldn't fathom why they did it that way)

It's because he closed his eyes...made you notice it more...

I liked it, it wasn't a gradual change, more a sudden switch, which is an interesting divergence.

And they said they wanted to keep the regeneration effect uniform!

In answer to the question: no, I thought it was great.

I was surprised it happened to be honest. I was a bit "was that it?!"

We had 20 minutes of build up and was all over in about 5 seconds. Think RTD cut the time down so he could have all the goodbyes in he wanted.

It was a bit instant wasn't it?

after the most drawn out death in the history of television (1 year build up and then 20 mins of goodbyes FFS) I for one was glad when it finally happened.....sad loose DT but the new team should hopefully bring back the edge that is been missing from RTD episodes,,,

I'm pretty sure it was the speed of the regeneration that led to the partial destruction of the Tardis, otherwise it would have gone kaboom a further 3 times by now!

I kind of liked that it - Ten didn't want to regenerate, so I'm glad it wasn't a morph, all smooth and beautiful to watch, but the actual change was quick and sudden, like it was the regen happened at the last possible moment.

Plus, what's Doctor Who without something clunky and clumsy

I thought it was crap too, wonder if Matt Smith is much shorter than DT and they thought it would make a proper morphing hard to do?

I'm pretty sure the camera angle was a bit different than before, their heads seemed to be at an angle. I think they have to do it a particular way for the morphing effect to work - it could be that they filmed it and then discovered they couldn't get the effect to work properly with the footage they had, meaning they had to fudge something together

It did feel a bit rushed, but I liked how 10 was reluctant to regenerate.

Technically, Davison's change to Colin Baker was instantaneous as the effect you saw was merely his hallucination.

I like it that way- wham! change!

I assumed it was because the regeneration had technically started 20 minutes before with his face healing, and he'd been delaying it as much as he possibly could, hence why the regeneration blast was so much stronger to damage the TARDIS and seemed to occur so much quicker.

I thought it lacked smoothness....much preferred the gradual change from Ecclestone to Tennant when the hair was seen to lengthen and expand .
Also I think Tennant should have had his eyes closed to match it up better.

I kind of felt the opposite, in the sense that I think we supposed to expect the change immediately after DT took the radiation hit in the cabinet. So the fact that it didn't happen till after DT had said all his goodbyes and crawled back to the Tardis made it more protracted than in the past, even though there wasn't a distinct morphing effect when it did happen.

It was rubbish. I expected a realistic effect which came out of the screen in 3D so I could see and smell it in the room then I'd start crying in awe of it all ending in a spontaneous combustion as I reached orgasm. You let us all down BBC. Many suicides were commited last night I suspect. I'm writing from beyond the grave as one of them.

There may have been a deliberate reason for the regeneration being more jarring - or this could be me finding a reason for it - but...

The two previous morphings we've seen have been accepted by the dying Timelord; the Ninth as long as he got to say what he wanted to say, went quite happily, while the Jacobi Master actually welcomed a new body to be a match to the young Doctor.

This time around, the Tenth Doctor stepped into the booth believing he was going to die - it was an out-and-out time to end it all decision. Then it didn't happen, he slowly began to regenerate, which for him, I think was worse - he might have been prepared to end it all, but not give up his life for the next body. And that comes across clearly in the line, "I don't want to go".

Then watch him - the regeneration process is much slower than before; it's not sudden or bright or violent. It;s like he's initially dissolving away before it kicks in.

Now remember when the Master refused to regenerate and chose to die?

I think the reason for the awkward change is because right until the end, the Tenth Doctor is fighting the process. Unlike the Master, he won't stop it, because he's accepted his fate is to move on rather than die out-right, but he's clinging to every second he can, and resisting the Eleventh Doctor's birth.

So the new Doctor has to fight his way through the dying body, rather than have the normal process of the last incarnation give up to cheat death.

Outrageous.

I thought it did seem a tad 'rushed' compared to the others.

No matter how long the preliminaries took, no matter how wanted or unwanted it was, one face should morph into the other. It's not even a particularly complex effect these days.

Personally, i believe the doctor didn't want to go, he liked himself as he was, and rather like the previous Non-regeneration, he tried to hold onto his present form, forcing the regeneration energy to repair him and then stop the regeneration at that stage, but last time he had a receptacle (his old hand) to send the excess energy, this time, there's nowhere for the energy to go, so he's forced to regenerate all the way.
that's why his face changes suddenly IMO, at least thats what i assumed while watching it.

But yes it could have been just poor work by effects team, but i don't believe that personally.

I thought it was wierd, but I think it turned out strange cause ten was tying to supress his regeneration as he didnt want to go. Thats my explanation anyway!

Edit: been beaten to it!

It does morph it's just quicker...

The speed is pronounced by DT closing his eyes as he succumbs to the very final moments, making you notice the join.

The Morph was made easier in the last regeneration by Christopher Eccleston not going any of the "standing there" acting after he said goodbye and his part of the regeneration before the morph being CG anyway.

It's also REALLY not a big deal in what was a fantastic effect overall

I re-watched it (a few times) and I do now notice a slight morph in appearance.

But it is very quick.
