Maybe he thought Time Lord spittle could extinguish the flames inside the TARDIS . . . !

Well because people spit when they speak. Dalton was against black, so I guess they decided to leave it in for effect. Doc11 was in the middle of a frenzied exploding Tardis, so he'll hardly worry about a bit of spit.

Hold a piece of glass in front of your mouth when you speak, its surprising how much fluid is expelled.

DT also had a HUGE amount of drool fly off his chin when he swiped the desk at the unfairness of it all

Simm, Tennant, Dalton and Smith all flobbered their way through the 2 episodes.

Actors spend years at drama school learning how to spit. You think this acting lark is easy, nope!

Yeah agree that spitting in a dramatic speech looks good , same as snot from the nose when emotional, but still not sure about the gob on the console from matt.

When you enunciate you spit!

RANT MODE

If I cry and snot starts threatening to come out I get a tissue and blow my nose. If I didn't have a tissue and snot came out of my nose I'd have to wipe it off even with a sleeve because it's really irritating having snot on your top lip. I have NEVER seen people just let snot dribble out in real life even in extreme circumstances. It's just a convention that one scriptwriter picks up from another so it's lazy writing as well as being very distracting because I keep thinking 'surely she'd wipe her nose instead of letting the snot dribble?'

Thanks, I feel better now.

I actually laughed when Matt spat and thought it was quite clever. To my mind, he'd just realised that although he had a new body, he still had a mouthful of David Tennant's saliva.

perhaps they were all partial to a bit of gob and verbal.

They were probably inspired by that episode of Friends with Gary Oldman in it.

I think it can convey a sense of realism, people do spit when shouting, especially when emotional.

It didn't bother me when Ecclestone did it shouting at the Dalek in, um, Dalek and I could see how it added to Dalton's madness in the star wars scene.

I wasn't so keen on Smith's deliberate flob in the TARDIS but hopefully that was just due to the stress of regeneration and won't become a regular motif.

In my opinion i don't think it was deliberate, probably accidental. And i also don't think it will become regualr lol . Imagine that The Doctor spitting all over the sidewalk or spits in the eye of a dalek

It's a trick learned at the RSC as a signifier of realism.

Whether or not an actor unavoidably spits is irrelevant to the question of how the scene can be lit or reshot to ensure that it doesn't show. In this case, the director and DP clearly wanted the saliva to be visible to connote the "high stakes" nature of what essentially was two hours of Xmas panto.

According to RTD on the part 2 commentary podcast Matt Smith is supposed to have got a piece of debris from the collapsing TARDIS in his mouth. Not sure if he was joking but ahh well.

I noticed all the spitting/spraying/slavering too! Pretty gross, to say the least.

I think in Matt Smith's case, he seemed genuinely to have had a mouthful of the disintegrating Tardis control room.

Perhaps they all prefer to spit rather than swallow.

Surely it's just something the actors do, rather than being a specific stage-direction in the script?
