Can You Guys Give Me A Breif History On Steven Moffat ?

I want to know anything you know about him, as all I know is that he is the new writer of dr who obviously.

Some of my questions are..

Has he worked on Dr Who Before ?

Has He written any previous works that are of a high standard like RTD had done with Queer As Folk ?

Does Moffat have a good repuation ?

How old is he ?

Do you think in your opinion that Moffat can do a better job than RTD ?

Please tell me what you know, as I know very little about the new writer. I have high expectations for him going on how the 20 second trailer went, but I want to get more of a insight into the gentleman.

He wrote the empty child, the girl in the fireplace, blink and silence in the libary before. But he also wrote the curse of fatal death.

Given your forum name, perhaps you remember Press Gang, a children's programme on CITV in the late 80s and early 90s about a school's student newspaper with Julia Sawalha, Dexter Fletcher as an American and quite a few future EastEnders? That was Moffat's big break, and also exceptionally well written. Much more than you'd expect from anything ITV or children's television related.

Crikey, CardiffBlu, do your research! (In fact, if you live in Cardiff, you can probably pop round and knock on the Moffat family's door).

Mr Moffat wrote scary Blink (Weeping Angels back next year), scary Empty Child (with scary gas mask people), loveydovey Girl in the Fireplace, and fairly good Library stuff.

The Curse of Fatal Death (Hugh Grant, Joanna Lumley and others as the Doctor) was a spot-on enjoyable Comic Relief DW skit a few years back, also by Mr Moffat. You can probably pick it up from Ebay for cheapness.

He was the first DW writer to write for Captain Jack, based on Russell T Davies's ideas.

Other stuff: PRESS GANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Loved by people of a certain age, it was a magnificent childrens drama of the late 80s / early 90s, which launched Julia Sawalha and others. Julia Sawalha was the companion in the Curse of Fatal Death. He also created and wrote Coupling (v funny) and Jekyll (not seen it).

He's a real Big Cheese in telly. His wife is a Big Cheese producer; her mother is a Big Cheese agent (once agent for Terry Nation).

If we're on about kids' telly, you could do far worse than see Dark Season and Century Falls, both remarkable CBBC dramas by Russell T Davies.

As a matter of fact I live on Llantrisant Road which is the same street the BBC Wales studios are situated on. I'm about 1 min away on foot, I can see the studios right across the other side of my street.

But............. I dont think for 1 second I can knock my BBC Studio neighbours door asking to go onto the Dr Who set, and then ask to speak to the writer Moffat so I can get a brief history on his C.V ?

You forgot Joking Apart and Chalk. In fact, I don't think Moff has ever written anything that wasn't absolutely superb. He's certainly one of the most successful and respected writers in British TV.

Didn't he also write the excellent 'Einstein and Eddington', starring the brilliant David Tennant?

He wrote Jekyll.

Extremely underated in my opinion!

Jekyll was a brilliant piece of television and one of the things that solidified my love for Steven Moffat. I defy anyone to watch that show and not watch it thinking how good of a writer Moffat is.

Lets not forget that Steven Spielberg begged him to write the TinTin movies, which I believe he wrote most of until he became an executive producer on Doctor Who, so he stepped back.

I think all we really need to know is that Moffat is one of the biggest fans of Doctor Who, an excellent writer having wrote some of the best episodes of the new Doctor Who (in my opinion) and he knows what he's doing.

Comedy series 'Coupling' very clever, full of twists, full of sexy women, full of lads lads... very real very adult... Doctor Who wise:- just about everything worth watching except WoM, Midnight and LotT (and maybe 42)

IMHO

Please don't quote or debate as I'm really not looking for my mind to be changed on what I like in the same way that I'm not trying to impose anything on anyone here

Coupling was genius! It's often slated as the British version of Friends but it's much much funnier!

Agreed-there's no comparison, Friends was just not in the same league.

You all had to start talking about Coupling. Now I have had to break out my Coupling DVD's again....That's me sorted for the next few hours.

His previous work is fantastic, as others have mentioned. My biggest concern is that being a showrunner isn't the same as being an episode writer, and he may be too busy to write good episodes himself. So it could be a disaster. But it probably won't be.

It's also worth noting, if you are the kind of person bothered by the "gay agenda", that Moffat was responsible for much of it. He wrote the Empty Child, which introduced Jack and a raft-load of gay innuendo, and there were references to off-screen gay sex with a butcher, too.

I wouldn't pay much attention to the trailer. Trailers always look good.

I was never a fan of RTD. I think Moffat can do a better job, and I hope he does, because it's going to be awkward no longer being able to blame RTD for everything wrong with Dr Who.

”

He's already both a writer and a producer and has excelled at both, I doubt there's much cause for concern.
