Which is a shame, because he's deprived me (and all other Who fans) of 10 hours of Dr Who adventures.
As I understand it (and I'm happy to be corrected if I've got it wrong), Tennant was offered the part of Hamlet on stage, and jumped at it. I have no problems with that at all.
He also knew he couldn't do that and Who, so the Who team held production on Series 31 (Series 5 under the new Calendar). This was so he could have a year off to do hamlet, then come back fresh and recharged the next year.
"No problem for the fans" says the production team "We'll give you 4 special episodes this year. That'll make up for it, won't it?"
Ummm. No.
Not counting the Christmas special, which we probably would have had anyway (given the recent history), we're now left with 3 extra episode.
3 "special" episodes. Special in what way? Because they're longer? Ummm, not really.
Ok, they'll be BIG storylines - something we've never seen before?
I'll reserve judgement on that, but suffice to say, there wasn't much special about Waters on Mars and Planet fo the Dead, plotlines we could have seen mixed in with another 10 episodes.
Ok, so as fans we'll sacrifice 10 episodes this year.
Oh, but wait.. he's said he doesn't want to do it anymore...
To me, it's the same as a mate asking if you can babysit his kids for a night, and you saying you will. Then another mate asks if you want to go to the cinema/pub/somewhere on that night and you say no, because you promised to babysit. Then when you get there, to babysit, you're told "Oh, no.. I'm not going out tonight now. I changed my mind. Never mind, eh?"
David Tennant owes me 10 hours of Dr Who!
