I see they are back in the new series. Same kind of storyline it'll be again. Can't they leave them for just one series for some originality?

apparentily the agreement the BBC have is that they must be used every year or they lose the rights to them. Hence the flashback scene in WoM.

You know this? I don't mind seeing them again. It's not what you do, it's how you do it, and I've no doubt Moffat will have ideas for the Daleks that stretch beyond "EMERGENCY TEMPORAL SHIFT"!

I agree the Daleks could do with a rest. But they are the iconic DW baddy and so I think we have to accept they will keep coming back series on series. They were over exposed in the 1960s too.

But I must ask, how do you know it will be the same kind of storyline again? Because actually you are wrong, it isn't.

Spoiler
The Daleks have no knowledge of what they are and are being used as an army by Churchill in the 2nd World War.

I haven't seen that kind of idea before, well at least not since the Troughton era.

But people are becoming tired of them and ratings could fall on Dalek episodes which would mean they would loose money so I dont think its doing them any favours.

Which people?
All the "casual" viewers I speak to all appar to love the Daleks.
(By Casual, I mean those who go "Oh, it's Dr Who tonight. I'm free, I think I'll watch it" rather than those (like me) who tape it, analyse it afterwards on a frame-by-frame basis, extrapolate various theories, discuss in depth with other like-minded people and come to our own conclusions, which 99% of the time are a total let-down based on what actually occurs.)

The Daleks create merchandise to sell. That can only be good

[Edit: Yeah, what Gareth said...]

what you mean is YOU are therefore everyone else must be.

I think you'll find the casual audience love the daleks. Thats why they shift so much dalek merchandise, and why Dalek episodes tend to rate so well.

Not a big fan of Daleks, but as long as the RTD cybermen don't somehow come back, I won't complain.

I doubt very much that ratings do anything other than rise for Dalek episodes. Only those of us who are going to watch Doctor Who regardless get anything like "tired" of the Daleks. Casual viewers love them. And I must admit I like Dalek episodes - very few other foes measure up as well.

Star Trek did the same with Q on The Next Generation in all but one season and once on Deep Space 9 and 3 times on Voyager, Then theres The Borg in both The Next Generation +Star Trek VIII: First Contact,Voyager and once on Enterprise and Deep Space Nine and many other alien races were in Star Trek a lot.

True enough, though I think those appearances felt less probably due to the longer seasons.

I didn't want them back but when I heard little things about the story back when they were filming it, I thought it sounded quite good! I'm looking forward to it as they are not going for a fully blown invasion for once!

Then the BBC should call their bluff. Doubt if there would be any exposure elsewhere. The spin off series never happened, did it

why would the call their bluff when it benefits the series but boosting ratings? I think thats what they call cutting off your nose to spite your face, isn't it?

I have no issues with Daleks being used at all however the stories have to strong for them. Personally I loved Dalek, Parting of the Waves, the Stolen earth and Journeys End.

Plus also with a new doctor you need to have a strong collection of villains to face him and when written well the Daleks are one of the strongest villains possible.

I am okay with Daleks, but would prefer that there appearance was kept secret.

Like when they came out of the Void Ship in Army of Ghosts, and- IIRC- the end of Bad Wolf.

Exactly The Daleks are one of those villians along with The Cybermen that you could just not imagine Doctor Who without

It's like having Batman with out the Joker or Two face Spiderman with out the green goblin or Venom. I think the expression is Iconic rouges gallery or something like that

My biggest peeve over the use of Daleks and other things from the original series is that, since the series began in 2005, they have not done a finale without them.

I would like to see a new series created Big Bad which could strike fear in a generation like they did decades ago.

They were only in the specials finale by name alone,so that's not strictly true

They weren't in the series 3 finale, or in TEOT.

I agree with your second paragraph, though. We could do with an original villain whose master plot is explored all the way through a series, a bit like Buffy.

I was referring to villains from the classic series in general.

Daleks weren't in the series 3 or specials finale, but the Master was. and Time Lords were in the last one aswell. and Cybermen were in the series 2 finale with the Daleks.

I must have missed that particular opinion poll then.

How can "they" (the BBC) lose money? And as merchandise (toys, DVDs etc), they are still a popular franchise it would appear (so BBC Worldwide actually profit from them, and that profit is fed back to the BBC into programming)
