.... shown in the end of Dr Who along with his companions, as she is just a very poor comedian who did a tv programme with DT what does she have to do with the programme?

In the series 3 two-parter set in 1913, when the Doctor was human, Jessica Stevenson played his wife. The character she played at the end of TEOT was that woman's great-granddaughter (convienient, huh?). He'd loved his wife so he probably wanted to say goodbye to her descendant, as he couldn't say goodbye to her herself, if that makes sense. Sorry, series 3 details are hazy in my mind, I'm sure someone will elaborate

She's an actress and a comedienne, and in my opinion good at both.

But, besides that, she was in Doctor Who because she had previously starred as the grandmother she mentioned in the Martha series for the two-part Human Nature/Family of Blood story. I guess the granddaughter device was used because the original character wouldn't have reacted in a way suitable for a quick two-minute scene.

I guess she gets promoted above other guest stars because the Doctor-as-a-human loved her and the two episodes were highly regarded by critics, fans and casual viewers. I'd imagine the only other similar candidate is Madame de Pompadour, but the Doctor had already jumped in and out of her entire life so probably can't go back. And Sophia Myles is off in Hollywood, I think.

EDIT: and it's Jessica Hynes now. Has been for a few years.

She wasn't his wife but they did fall in love. A "dream sequence" showed them married with children in a possible future that never came to pass.

As I remember it was a heartbreaking two episodes and her character meant a lot to him.

Agree. I thought her acting was one of the best performances of a guest star in Season 3

I think OP you'll find she's not really even a comedienne. She is an award winning and very talented writer and actress. But lets not let facts get in the way as usual on DS eh?

If you'd actually paid attention to the show too, you'd know damn well why she was there.

lol, my mother claims Tom Baker was her Doctor and that she's been watching since then, but she still keeps forgetting the Doctor is an alien (well, most of the time he's an alien!)

The question should be "why was Mme de Pompadour" not in it?

He fell in love with her too didnt he? And on that occasion he was actually the Doctor, not just John Smith. He was even prepared to give up his whole life as a Timelord for her.

Seems a curious omission unless you consider how Sophia Myle's career has taken off since making "The Girl in the Fireplace"

Maybe DT's break-up with Sophie was so bad they can't stand to be in the same room together? Only joking, I know it was an amicable split

Actually I DO NOT watch Dr Who as i find DT quite pretentious/anoying and too much in love with himself. but I have heard of the different companions, but I knew that Jessica stevenson (who i have never seen in a serious role, which as an actor must also be part of her talents!!!!) and she is such a good writer, no one can remember the name of the tv programme she wrote so I will give the "award winning" bit a miss.

I don't think he fell in love with her. He became very fond of her and was very involved in her life as it progressed knowing he had to save her life at some point.

What confuses me is why he didn't travel back in time and actually see her again? Why ask her grand daughter if she was happy when he could have gone to see for himself and get one last look at her?

She would not have wanted to see him, as she fell in love with the man, John Smith, not the Timelord the Doctor, she said she could never travel with him if he causes so much suffering wherever he goes.

I suppose because they didn't part under happy circumstances. She actually blamed him for all the death and destruction that happened. He didn't think she'd exactly be happy to see him again even if he was just checking to see her life had turned out ok

Sorry I should have said that she was "asked back" as she sounds just as pretentious as DT, so they must be VERY good friends, by the way what has she been doing recently? apart from changing her name.

Exactly in what way does she sound pretentious? Working hard and being nominated for awards doesn't seem pretentious to me.

If you watch both "The Girl in the Fireplace" and "Human Nature" again you will see that comparitively, there is no question that the Doctor has much more powerful and romantic feelings for Reinette, than he does for Stevenson's character (whose name escapes me ).

That he would visit the grand-daughter of someone that his alter-ego (John Smith) fell in love with, and not visit at all Reinette is bizarre.

She has 3 children. Do you still expect her to be working full time?

To be frank i don't understand why you're even here. You're not adding to any dicussion, merely picking apart something thats not even there.

'Spaced' Which is the sitcom which she co-wrote with Simon Pegg is critically seen as one of the very best comedies written in the last 20years.
