The novels often described the TARDIS as old and battered much like cod in a fast food joint.

So what? It's a publicity shot, not a scene from the show.

Something tells me that this is an actual police box, not one used in the series.

I can remember the media fuss over Colin Baker - fans were a bit silent to say the least....

Imagine if they had been around from the start?

1963:
"I don't like this new show. Doctor Who? What a stupid name. Its's just some old bloke who lives in a junkyard with his grand daughter. He's not even a real doctor I bet."

1966:
"So, they recon they can just put a new bloke in place of Bill Hartnell and it'll be fine, do they? I won't be watching it ever again! Bring back Susan I say. it's been rubbish since she left."

1970:
"OMG! BBC say they're going to replace Troughton with Worzel Gummidge! I bet Aunt Sally will be the new companion! Well I won't watch it any more. Bring back Victoria! It's been rubbish since she left!"

1974:
"Who the **** is Tom Baker? He looks like someone on acid! There is no whay they'll take him seriously! What is with that scarf in the publicity photo? Seriously... And (Spoilers) They say he'll have a mechanical dog! WTF!!!!??!?!?!?!?! Bring back Jo. It's been rubbish since she left!"

1982:
"OMG! The new Who is going to be a vet! Keep him away from K9! Bring back Romana! It's been rubbish since she left!"

And so on!

One of the many reasons I wish I'd been born before 1982 is Doctor Who. I wish I'd been old enough to remember all the hysteria over the supposed rubbishness of some of the Doctors, especially McCoy. Whenever I read Digital Spy and Gallifrey Base posts about Doctor Who in the 1980's, it sounds hilarious. Though it was probably less hilarious for fans who were watching it at the time

People who think McCoy is rubbish are themselves rubbish. Or perhaps just overly focussed on his first year, which is awful.

You could actually say it's the best post of the new decade, unless you're in the camp that believes the new decade doesn't start until 1st January 2011

According to this page, they were using a Fibreglass Tardis by the time C.Baker took over, so I'll wager that's an older one.

Except Jon Pertwee played Worzel Gummidge after leaving Doctor Who.

The problem with Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy wasn't that they wern't good Doctors it was the script writers who created crap stories. One of the best stories IMO is the Curse of Fendrick with Sylvester as the Doctor. Excellent script and proved with decent writers DW could have gone one but it was too late by then.

Thanks, that sounds about right since I have read certain story synopses from that period that seem completely crap. I should really buy Classic Who DVDs from ebay and watch them to see for myself, shouldn't I? So far, the only Classic episode I have on DVD is Earthshock Part I, which I got at a car boot sale, but I haven't even watched it yet! I think I'll wait till I've bought more episodes and then I'll treat myself to a Classic marathon. I'll make sure I buy the Curse of Fendrick.

"Genesis Of The Daleks" with Tom Baker as The Doctor is essential.

If you're actually going to be typing it into Amazon, etc, go for "The Curse of Fenric". Obviously just a typo by lanners, not otherwise worth mentioning, doesn't matter. Wouldn't have mentioned it but for your intent to purchase.

Also get:

• Caves of Androzani
• Robots of Death

Actually, don't get Caves of Androzani. Watch it legally and for free on youtube. And definitely don't watch the Twin Dilemma immediately afterwards — it's not just everything that can be wrong with Doctor Who, it's everything that can be wrong with television.
