I was wondering does anyone know why RTD is obsessed with Russel Tovey in VOTD i found him abit of a boring actor but i have never seen being human, i remember reading some were that RTD said that if he was still working on DW Russel Tovey would be his first chioce.

So i was wondering if anyone knows why RTD has such an obsession with Russel Tovey?

Quite frankly, because he fancies the pants off him.

Read "The Writer's Tale" for more info. (And it's worth reading anyway, as it's fascinating).

No idea. I can't stand Tovey (or those off-putting ears)

A lot of people do. He certainly doesn't need RTD to get work.

Yes, that seems about his level. God, I'm glad he's gone.

I'm glad that RTD has restored the show to it's former glory, so although I'm sorry he's gone, I know that we are in the safest of hands with Stephen M. A lot of humour, a smattering of drama and plenty of innuendo and speculation to keep us all busy, just as it has done for the last 5 years.

Best of luck Stephen (or is it Steven?) and Matt, Karen and Arthur.

It's with a V. And I'm looking forward to continuing to enjoy the same show that tingramretro and Kapellmeister hate so much and will continue to hate.

Don't you think he looks like Mike - who swims like a fish?

I first noticed R.Tovey in the film of A.Bennett's "The History Boys" and for me he was the standout of the cast. I thought he was also very fine in "Voyage of the Damned" and would be delighted were he to feature in future episodes of "Dr Who," either as Midshipman Frame or as The Doctor himself.

Regarding RTD "fancying the pants" off him, I have noticed quite a lot of male "eye candy" in DW over the last few years - personal favourites include Harry Peacock (Proper Dave in "Silence in the Library") and Clive Standen (Private Harris in "The Poison Sky.")

If S.Moffat taking over means a reduction in that, well, tant pis.

I really don't see Russell as having the maturity to be the Doctor, at least not yet. There's something boyish about him, more so than Matt, despite being a bit older.

point taken, but maybe in 5 years he'll have grown up (and into his ears...)

as a guest star yes, as a regular, no, it wouldn't work.

If that is true (and I fear it could be) then it is appalling.

A bit of an over-reaction, surely?

This kind of thing has gone on in showbiz for decades - centuries, in fact - though it's usually been straight men casting attractive women.

I don't see the harm - it's not as though Davies cast Tovey with a view to bedding him, as RTD seems very happily married, let alone any kind of "casting couch" accusations (which would be appalling but strike me as highly unlikely in this case.)

Thats another occasion where you are asserting that people who have criticisms of the show actually "hate it". All I see is from what those two have said its that they are fans who are rather disillusioned from time to time and voice some of their disappointments. That they keep coming back to the show shows their dedication and probably love, not hatred.

Tingrametro, Kappellmeister - do you actually hate "Dr Who"?

NewbieC - will you actually listen to their answer and have the courtesy not to make such accusations about them in future?

I can't describe having someone make 2 appearances, and one of them a cameo, in your production as an obsession. You can just as easily describe Elizabeth Sladen and John Barrowmans appearances and spin off series as obsessions.

Russel Toveys cameo in TEOT was part of the let's have a round up of most of those who've helped 10 out during his life, Jessica Hynes showed up too, as well as being in a two parter in season 3, maybe thats another obsession.

Had RTD had an extra half hour available he'd have had a few more former guest stars showing up. Though I doubt Kylie would have been available, she's a busy girl who get's about a lot.

What's so appalling about it? Artists have been casting/sculpting/painting people they find attractive for centuries.

I'm not surprised that's all you can see. I stand by what I said. What do you care what I or anyone else think?

Anyone who actually likes a show simply doesn't spend day after day posting nothing but venom about it and the people connected with it without ever posting anything that indicates there's anything they like about it.

I've seen no courtesy from you towards anything or anybody, your post about RTD in this thread being just another example.

RTD could discover the cure for cancer and that one would be slating him for yet another solution pulled out at the last minute.

so what if RTD fancies Russell Tovey..he is a good looking bloke. just because fancies him though doesn't equate to something going on or there being conclusive proof any 'casting couch' was indeed involved.

And who else could he have fixed Jack up with? Needs to be character who has:

a) remained alive after their episode
b) hasn't met Jack
c) exists in the present
d) could be found in a bar off Earth

I think it was down to either Alonso or the woman from the Shadow Proclamation.
