It depends on the wellies. Some have much better soles than others. The Aigle ones I have claim to have soles that are based on walking boot technology and they do give a good grip, as good as my hillwalking boots. However, round here we've recently had a lot of snow that's thawed out, been rained on and then frozen solid, and nothing much short of some sort of crampons copes with that.
I've tried
Yaktrax, which are excellent on frozen, compacted snow. However, we've now got fine powdery snow on top of the icy stuff, and the springs on the Yaktrax get clogged up before they can get down to the ice, and in these conditions I don't think the Yaktrax are much of a help, though they're great in other situations.
I've now ordered some things called
Kahtoola MICROspikes which get
good reviews. Unfortunately they're out of stock in most places, but I'm told stock should be arriving fairly soon.
