Am i the only one who finds gay and incest storylines in soaps particularly interesting and exciting to watch.

All the repression of feelings and sneaking around is also a staple of affair storylines but i just find those boring and pedestrian.

I like gay male storylines, particularly if one or both are nice-looking. Less interested if it's women, unless the acting is great and there's some other drama or a complication. Definitely better if there is secrecy or an emotional journey to get involved with, to do with self-acceptance/denial etc.

Incest - I think many people find this fascinating because it's something most of us can't understand psychologically. It's the same kind of slightly horrified fascination we have with grisly serial killings.

I agree about affairs - the secrecy adds some element of tension, but it's such a tired old scenario unless there is a twist.

Yep, same here, luckylila. I'm interested in gay s/lines in terms of the emotional journeys and struggles that they go through. And I want to understand things from their perspective.

Incest stories? The first one I ever watched was the one involving that brother and sister in Brookside - forget their names. No matter what the twist etc, all I'm thinking is "you're related - what else am I supposed to think and feel?", so ultimately they do nothing for me on any level.

However, for me the grisy serial killings has been done too much to death (excuse the pun - not intended). Those kind of stories, well, I don't know- they do nothing for me, I'm afraid. You kill one person, you kill another, and another, and another ...

Agree about lesbian s/l - they don't interest me that much.

On the whole, for me, a story has to go beyond sex, physical attraction, blah, blah. I love the emotional and cerebral aspects of a story, something that gets to me on a psychological and human level.

Affairs, adultery, murder stories tend to bore me, which usually means the TV stays off most of the time!

I, personally, cannot watch the Gay storylines. I know many gay and straight people, but they don't display their affection, in public, like they do in soaps.. it often feels overplayed.. kind of.. artificial.

I'm maybe not explaining myself properly, and have probably offended loads of people.. I dont' mean too. sorry

I love gay storylines regardless of whether they involve women or men but then again I am a gay asexual. Incest storylines I am ok with. I loved the Sharon/Dennis one but then again they were not blood related. In real life I might feel a bit weird if I thought of someone being in a romantic or sexual relationship with a family member but if it is a brother and sister who have not met till adulthood I am understanding though unfortunately its still illegal in real life. As for murder storylines - I have a morbid fascination with them - particularly the Lucas one at this point.

It would be wonderful if that happened - if it was accepted as normal just like everything else. I often feel very conflicted on it though. I've always believed that falling in love with the same sex is no different from falling in love with the opposite but whenever I hear about a friend who had a violent same sex partner or about highly sexual gay parades or that gay culture is not a mirror image of straight culture I get very confused. I've always thought everything was equal, always wanted everything to be equal.

I don't mind them, I think its good they are including more variable storylines but its seems lately the gay storylines are getting repetitive and too similar between the soaps we've had 3 major gay storylines in the last couple of years and they just all seem too similiar, straight male falls for gay male, but then confusion and denial kicks in etc, any chance they show a normal gay relationship?

JP and Craig was my favourite.
Syed and Christen is hit and miss for me, drag on too long.
and the new one with Aaaron on Emmerdale just seems to close to the Hollyoaks storyline.

It's never going to happen while people who you've just met begin the conversation by announcing "I should tell you I'm gay" (or begin posts with "As a gay man"). Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn, as I don't see them as something odd or special. I'm particularly puzzled by the term "militant lesbian"; what on earth does that mean.

I sometimes suspect it's so that you can't criticise the slightest thing about them or what they say, or they'll start shouting "homophobia"; though I don't know whether that means "fear of the same" from the greek, or "fear of the human race" from the latin.

The more they are shown, the less sensational they will be.

When they become a coming out storyline, and not an affair, I may be interested, but until such a time. It's just always an affair with a small difference.

Gay storylines are the Norm these days , But the coming out storyline and struggling to come to terms with it is different to what we are used to seeing, if its handled well it will make good viewing, think Emmedale are coping well ATM wth theirs , bt I hope they don't senationalise it , they need to keep it simple and warm hearted,

The Incest storyline is a storyline not typical of what we see in our normal lives, but that is not because it dosen't happen, its kept behind closed doors and happens alot more than what we may think , That makes it also interesing .

Yes I like gay storylines in soaps, the coming out process I think helps straight viewers understand it all better. Plus as a bisexual it's nice to be represented in soaps.

As for incest, it depends on why it's being done. The one in Brookside between Nathan/Georgia I actually didn't mind and their relationship was never that replusive to me for some strange reason. The one in Emmerdale at the moment is interesting and I like what it is doing for Maisie's character, it's giving her something meaty to play with instead of her being a bimbo rich girl all the time. The fall out should be good to watch.

It's great that there are more and more storylines involving gay/lesbian characters these days. It would be nice if they could portray a gay relationship without having to sensationalise it in some way but then would that be interesting to viewers watching a soap? Christian in EE came into the show as a confident gay man, but instead of giving him a boyfriend and a lovey dovey relationship, they have him fall in love with Syed. But it makes for far better viewing

We've come a long way though from soaps not even showing a kiss to scenes like Christian/Syed in EE the other week. Woo!

I do find incest storylines interesting, because you know there's the inevitable reveal/fall out to look forward to. They're usually derived from the two people either not knowing (such as ED at the moment with Ryan/Maisie) or having not grown up together (such as HO with Rhys/Beth). Does anyone remember the brother/sister in Brookside? What was the story there? Did they grow up together?

from what i remember i'm sure they grew up together. the storyline went on for far too long and got bogged down in loads of interminable episodes where the whole family was having family therapy. nat, georgia, olly, bel and little daniel simpson

There needs to be more Lesbian gay sl's in soap, there's way too may male ones, don't get me wrong I luv the Christian and Syed one, but it is annoying that there are no lesbian sl's. Christian and Syed gay sl is the best gay sl I have ever seen in a soap.

I am sorry, but as someone from a different age, i find gay male scenes on my telly somewhat embarasing, so does my wife, so its not just a male thing, also the fact that i have never knowingly met many gay people, male or female, sorry if this offends, its just the way i feel.

I agree. It seems every time a soap does a lesbian storyline it involves a straight woman 'experimenting' or some unhinge psycho lesbian serial killer.
