A friend of mine who has signed up with 3 and has one of the fancy new (could be considered a palm pilot almost) phone - don;t ask me the name I've no idea but I'm sure someone can enlighten me, anyway - to get back to my point. My friend finds this phone quite big to carry around all the time so he tried the sime card out in my unlocked panasonic GD67 - and low and behold it worked. Excited by this he has decided to get an unlocked G2 phone of his own.

Now upon speaking with another friend of mine who temps for 3 (according to him never ever join 3 - better to wait until the other companies have their networks up and running) has siad that while the sim card might work in the G2 phone 3 are not keen on this for obvious reasons and can check that you are using your sim card in one of their 3 phones and if they think that it is not legitimate they can lock the sim or something - at this stage the whisky was flowing and I kind of lost track of the conversation.

So basically can anyone enlighten me further as to the albility of using a 3 mobile G3 sim card in an unlocked G2 phone.

I thank you very much.

Ed

This has been well covered on all the 3G forums. 3 know this practice is happening and they have now introduced a technical solution that identifies the IMEI No of phones using their roaming partner network (02). Armed with this info they can block the SIM's they have issued on the basis that the user is outwith the agreed T + C's that 3 provide for all of their services.

Sometimes this happens in days, sometimes weeks or the first you might hear is when a new USIM card pops through your letterbox with a letter telling you the old one needs replaced. Suffice to say if you are signing up or advising anyone to get a three handset to use the SIM in a 2G handset - it is a very temporary solution at best and in the future as 3 cover more of the country they may restrict roaming to selected areas where they dont have their own coverage.
