Great that you getting some recons, I think you will really like the Massacre one.

Maybe The Celestial Toymaker is helped along by the pictures. I just love the idea of the games and dangerous chairs and playing card people.

I really like Tom Baker's portrayal, and what little I've seen of JP has been great.

I'll also join the stripey jumper fanclub.

I lurked here for a very long time before becoming "outside" but, I believe, you got into Doctor Who since the revival?

I know quite a few recent fans who wouldn't dream of watching the "old series" because of its production values. I've been a fan forever so I don't understand that but a good friend of mine thought "The Talons of Weng Chiang" was cheap rubbish so... after I marked him for death... I realised Doctor Who fans aren't swayed by production values but that "indefinable magic" the show has!

Still, if I'd discovered the series from, say, "Rose", would I feel the same? Would I still enjoy "The Claws of Axos"?

Yes you are right. First episode I saw was The Next Doctor. My thirst for Doctor Who is immense, I think it is the most amazing character ever created and I regret not being able to be there from the beginning. I'm quite a nostalgic at heart anyway, so going back a few eras is very enjoyable and having the show as it is now does not detract in any way from what it managed to deliver in the 60s,70s, 80s and erm...1996.

And I must make it clear, I am not a Peter Purves fan, just a stripey jumper fan.

That sounds fascinating. I've lived with the Doctor all my life and I can't imagine what discovering him as an adult would be like!

I've only gotten into "Ashes to Ashes" since last week but that's not the same!

I was a child when Doctor Who hooked me so I'll never know what special tricks the "new" series has to grab the current fans. I suppose it's basically the same stuff - brilliant, brilliant man in a magic box fighting evil - but I can't imagine growing up without the Doctor.

I must admit it was my children that roped me into going back and starting on the series one boxset, but it didn't take long for the joy of Doctor Who to sink in.

I think the joy is that it's one man, saving the world...the universe with nothing more than a blue box, a sonic screwdriver and a great mind. The different realms that it can take your imagination to and wonderful connection to us earthlings through the companions.

And writing that has just made me wonder if that is why I don't like Steven so much. Barbara, Ian and Dodo are very much rooted in my era, as are Rose, Martha and Donna. Katriana and Steven seem to be out of our time and more difficult to relate to.

Tigger, I'd be curious to see how you like Power of the Daleks when you get to it since you mentioned on another thread that you don't quite 'get' Troughton. I'm not sure I entirely 'get' him either but I did enjoy him in that one.

Oh, I'll lt you know, don't worry.

Finished the Gunfighters yesterday. If I hear that song one more time I may scream.

"It's your last chance of living......."

If only it was.

Felt that the story was a bit of a let down. I was really looking forward to it as I really do like the good ole Westerns, but it was nothing like the great American films. Shame really, but not up to much for me.

Best bit was Steven and Dodo being forced to sing the song.

Even the Doctor felt a let down in this.

Ho hum, onwards and upwards.

I loved the Gunfighters, but haven't seen it for years. the siong was quite clever, i thought, and the lyrics get grimmer and less jokey as the story progresses. It's a great story for Bill, who clearly loves the humour of it. Calling Wyatt Earp "Mister Werp" is lovely.

The Savages next. The soundtrack CD of it is a masterpiece.

(My first recon DVDs have arrived: Massacre, Myth Makers and Smugglers. hope to wtach them at some point in this lifetime. Need to convince Mrs Chuff of their worth first).

I think they played the song too often, that's why it got on my wick a bit. The humour didn't do it for me either, it just felt silly. Maybe it was because I was expecting so much more, not sure really but I was disappointed.

Started the Savages today. So far so good, really liking this.

And I hope you get to watch the recons soon. Tell Mrs Chuff it's a must see.

I think The Gunfighters would have been a lot better story without the singing jarring the action every other scene. That's what ruins an otherwise entertaining story and Hartnell was at his comedy best. As has has been said, The Savages I think rates as one of my favourite Hartnell Stories. The Recon make the whole thing seem even better.

Just on a seperate note, I watched The Shining last night and I don't know if it was just me or certain parts of the background music used were similar, if not the same, as the incidental music used in The Web Of Fear, plus a little bit of music from The Ice Warriors. Now I don't know if it's me going insane(probably) but has anyone else watched The Shining and thought the same thing or should I call a psychiatrist right now......?

(Suddenly feel the need to pick up an axe and go....here's Davey!)

It is the same piece of music - Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta (the first movement, if I recall) by the Hungarian composer Bela Bartok rather than something written specifically for Doctor Who, though.

Loose Canon can now do DVDs! I got my three back in 3 days! (Not watched them yet though).

I was going to say that The Web of Fear uses "stock" music, but have been beten to it. not seen The Shining for years, but it seems reasonable that it could be the same piece of music.

The Savages soundtrack is a beaut, and it's such a shame we'll never see it, It annoyed me that, when DWM did its last poll, The Savages did very badly. I think it was voted worst story of all time by the youngest age group.

Thanks for that, I'm glad I'm not going mad just yet, though it's still spooky to hear that music on a different production. (And I can put the pickaxe down now!lol!)

It's not unexpected that the youngest age group wouldn't like The Savages. Guess the story is a world away from the production values of the news series they are used to. I love the soundtrack on it to and fits in superbly with the story and that sort of music I think is very rare for Sixties Who, it really does strike a chord and makes you feel the suffering of The Savages in the story.

My issue with that vote on the Savages is that none of the youngest will ever have seen it, and it's unlikely that more than a couple of them will have heard the soundtrack (as it was the first soundtrack CD to be withdrawn from sale). A few people may know the outline of the story, a couple may have read the book, but the majority have voted based on know knowledgel.

Set to work on the Smugglers recon last night. Mrs Chuff snoring gently within a few mins of the start of ep.2. I loved it, though. What a treat!

They do such a good job that sometimes you forget you're watching a recon! At least I do.

In this day and age most of us have experienced streaming video where the bandwidth is crap and you only see the occasional still frame anyway.

the singing did spoil the Gunfighters for me too.

The Savages was just brilliant. Loved this story.

Glad you have your DvDs. Hope you enjoy them.

I can't believe The Savages did badly, it's a really, really good story. What's not to like? The idea of pinning someone down and draining their lifeforce is just so frightening, and then to think that you can go through that experience time and again as the Savages did. Absolutely horrible but so well played out.

Jano took on the Doctor's personality so well also, and that played out really well for me. Can't find anything to fault it as I was on the edge of my seat pretty much all the way through it.

So if they hadn't seen it, then they shouldn't have voted on it. Even the recon and the soundtrack must be worthy of a good score without having seen the story in it's orginal form. I really don't understand that.

Ooh Smugglers glad you are enjoying it. That's not far down my list now. I start on The War Machines today and then I'll have a little break before starting on Season 4.

As you are watching them all in order, you'll be gobsmacked by TWM: it feels so modern and unlikle anything that has gone before. The army! London! Sexy characters! A nightclub!
