Today, 9th January, is the great Jimmy Page's birthday.
Argueably THE greatest guitarist this country has produced, and founder of our greatest ever rock band, Led Zeppelin.

Have a good one Jimmy, looking forward to the new material this year.
Also please have a discreet word with Robert Plant about a Zeppelin tour...

I'd argue Dave Davies from the Kinks is the greatest - he basically created the punk rock and heavy metal guitar sound in one damn song.

But well done on starting a thread associated with proper music; a true rarity in these parts.

true, but tbh it was a pretty basic sound.

He's one of many unsung guitar heroes of the time.
Talking of proper music, anyone remember the Spencer Davis Group, and Traffic?
Spencer Davis's sound was ahead of its time, and still sounds good today
The Kinks too,and the Small Faces.
And the mighty Yardbirds who produced Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck, and who went on to greater things, with a name change to Led Zeppelin

Yes but rock music was in it's infancy at that time, and Dave, amongst others, redefind it, polished it, and made it what it is today,

Having loved the bands you've mentioned for several years, I can see my parents taught me well

'keep on running' was a childhood favourite and is probably my all time fav single! i love that track and its one that i never tire of hearing... spencer davis is possibly heavily overlooked, remembered for kor, but the challenging 'im a man' was real cutting edge material in an age when homosexuality was still illegal.

Cool thread dedicated to 'dad rock'! Happy birthday Jimmy!

As well as the mighty Zep and Yardbirds Page played on hundreds of great sixties records. I love his playing on Them's 'Baby Please Don't Go', Dave Berry's 'My Baby Left Me' and Billy Fury's 'Nothin' Shakin'' particularly.

I love the Spencer Davis Group whose mid 60s singles were up there with the best. They also did some really cookin' instrumentals like 'On The Green Light' and 'Stevie's Groove'.
