So, I'm technically into month 3 using my iPhone with orange's 750MB data 'limit' and am currently waving at it as I head toward 800MB..with almost two weeks still to go till 'months' end..

How is everyone else getting on, and has anyone been taken to task for using loads of data yet?

I should add that this has occured without any video or audio streaming at all, just what I would class as 'using the capabilities of the phone'.. ie apps, t'internet and so forth..

I used about 3 GB last month and so far about 1.5 GB this month . No problems so far. Have not been warned about my usage or charged extra. I find with my type of usage I hit the 750 mb FUP in days.

I'd really like to know what you chaps are doing to rack up such usage. I find that the 3G service throughput is so inconsistent as to limit the data usage naturally.

The App or Music store doesn't let one download any one item above 10MB on 3G. Flash based video is out of the question, and even streaming Internet radio struggles to sustain continuous audio much above 50kbps.

I'm not being nosey, just genuinely curious. Perhaps I'm not such a power user or I'm missing out on something.

Have been watching a lot of tv catch up and Radio box. Both these apps eat data at a alarming rate.

My iphone is on 3 with 1gb data allowance and I use 800 meg a month, mainly internet radio that eats my bandwidth...

Orange wouldn't last the month for me.

I download less than 50MB a month, even though I get unlimited internet with o2.

Most of my serious downloading is done at home, when I'm connected to WIFI.

I have to manage with 500MB with O2. Not looking good.

hmmmm, i'm being tempted by vodafones upcoiming iphone deal, now am worried 1gb per month might not be enough (I'd be using wi-fi at home so that'll help)

1 Gig will be fine for most people, unless you go absolutely crazy. I thought I was a heavy user listening to streaming audio for about 12 hours + a month plus a lot of browsing and other downloads, but I manage with about 800 meg a month, sometimes 900.

Three sends you a text when you get close to the limit too, and you don't get charged when you go over it which is nice, it just stops working until you add another bolt on or call them or something.

I'd say anything over a gig is really unusual and excessive for a mobile phone. I'd say if you are using over a gig a month please consider other users on the network because for a phone that's excessive.

+ to these people who think O2 is unlimited it's not, if you read the terms it says that continuous streaming is forbidden, so if you use over a gig on tvcatchup, VOIP, or internet radio you are likely to get a letter asking you to moderate your usage or you will lose your data connection. I've posted examples of these letters from O2 before.

i've had my orange iphone 3gs for 3 months now and never used more than 200MB....even though i get full 3g coverage, the speeds are just complete and utter pants....so i go back to wifi where i can.

what the hell do you download?

It is an FUP but a very soft cap, if you hit say 1.5GB in downloads in the odd month we don't tend to kick up a fuss. But its also why you have access to hotspots as well such as the cloud and openzone (although I am not sure which provides for orange network). Split your useage between the two and you should be fine.

Do you work for Orange? If so, is it true that the network is struggling to cope with the iphone? Yes, the 3g Network may be the biggest in the country....but what good is it if it doesn't work properly?

If you don't work for Orange then I apologise

From what I'm aware we are managing fine with the iPhone, unlike O2 we have better prepared our network in anticipation of the device (and similar ones). I am not saying its a universally perfect service mind you, depends on the cell and the area you are in.

But generally Orange is managing fine, as I understand it with regards to 3G traffic most of the networks are handling this reasonable bar O2 so it goes to show how poor the network is in comparison.

Saying that however, I haven't checked the bulletins in work for a while since I have been on leave but if there are any issues I shall report back.

I'm Orange & have excellent 3G coverage, just had my iphone bill, my data usage for the month was 1394.8754 megabytes, so I'm well over, I've streamed alot of internet radio though.

No extra charge.

Sadly my area has been hit hard by the IPhone. Orange are the only decent 3G network in my area and before the IPhone came out I used to get around 1 meg download speeds most of the time. Now I am lucky if the speeds hit 0.2 meg. They just cannot cope with the demand.

Orange have been in the dark ages in terms of mobile Internet for years.

One would hope the iPhone might open their eyes to mobile Internet use and force them to offer a reasonable amount of data use to make the device useful on their network.

I had an Orange phone a couple of years back and it had all the Internet fuctionality but on Orange it was useless as they charged ridiculous prices for data and wanted a silly monthly charge to access their crap walled Orange World garden. I left of course!

On my iPhone since May I have used just over 1.1GB in total, that's sent and received. Don't know where people pluck these 3GB figures from, seen this banded around. Sounds like propaganda to me.

Aside from a somewhat skewed comment, you use your experience from 2+ years ago to base your comment on now?

Orange don't charge "silly" amounts for data if anything its inline with other networks, when it comes to blackberry data they are the cheapest of all the networks in that the package only costs a fiver.

Thats a moot point however, I am well aware Orange is not perfect and judging from comments here and other places parts of the network are struggling with the implementation of the iPhone. I haven't experienced many issues with my dongle mind you nor my 9700 however I'm in a big city where cells/masts are plentiful.

Its a bitch these days when you buy a mobile and you don't get the 14 days cooling off period. As it would allow individuals to assess the coverage and variable speeds in the areas one frequents. That said anyone looking to switch networks would be best trying out a PAYG sim for a few days and see what its like.

As an update to my usage..

I got this text on the 26th of feb..

"Just to remind you, your talkplan is subject to a fair use allowance of 750mb per month for mobile internet browsing and so far you've used 1166mb. If you use an additional 100mb before your nexy bill date your browsing speed will be reduced for 10 days..'

So no charge, just a warning..however..My bill date is the 23rd and I must have hit that amount about half way through the month.

I don't mind the limitations so much if all they're going to do is slow down my internet..which is already a bit slow anyway..but at least get the warning sent out in time..

I certainly hope that Opera Mini comes to the Iphone soon..

I've used 2.1GB in just under 2 weeks.

Streaming TV uses a lot of bandwidth, you know

Thankfully, O2 don't define a limit, as such.....

I'm with O2 and I regularly do 1.5 Gig a month sometimes more...I stream live TV and Radio quiet a lot...Never had a problem in the 14 months I've had it.
So I wouldn't worry...

I've also had the same message as above from orange saying that if I use more than am extra 100mg in the days running up to my next billing date then they will reduce my Internet usage for 10 days (like it wad that fast in the 1st place!!) so anyway I turned my 3g off and used about 20mg in the next 2 days and they send me another message saying I've gone over the extra 100mg and they are reducing it as of now till the next billing date!! How does that make sense???
I have been with Orange mow for 12 years and have mever had so many problems with them than in the last year!! I wish I'd gone with o2 now for my iPhone deal as I'm stuck with Irange now for another year and half!!
What's the point of offering the iPhone which is great for Youtube etc and them cap our internet usage???? (rant over lol)

Theres a seperate 750Mb limit on wifi through BT Openzone, but use on your own home wifi doesnt count towards the FUP in any shape or form
