Music shows on TV

I read an article earlier where a band manager was saying that Johnathon Ross' departure from the BBC will make it even harder for bands to get on TV.
Why have so many music shows disappeared from TV? I would have thought as music is still so popular, TV stations would have been keen to keep making music shows.

Anyone any theories on why they have declined?

Youtube, perhaps.

Why wait for a specific time on a specific night of the week to watch a performance when you can listen to the song and see the video or other live performances of the song whenever you want?

Also, most people now have access to music channels such as 4music.

I heard the report slightlt differently.

What I thought had been said was that it will make it more difficult to get mainstream exposure.

I would expect the music channels and specialist shows such as Jools to attract an audience who are already well into music. Youtube is similar in that you are only likely to search for what you have heard of.

What Jonathon Ross does, and I can't think of any other shows doing it at the moment, is to have a guest band within what is a general entertainment show, hence reaching a more general audience.

That was my take on it.

you're right trigpoint - I didn't word that very well. My question was more why do the mainstream programs not feature more music?

I was thinking this the other day. I think the answer is no-one has come up with a good format or idea.
Is anyone old enough to remember "The Tube". It had Madonna's first ever uk performance. Then there's the demise of TOTP, inevitable, but there is still a huge gap.

There's too much choice, and because of this quality has declined.

If there was less choice they'd be more quality (lets face, it, 90% of the channels we have access to are full of cheap, pointless programming).

The reason music shows are not common any more is because people can access content on music TV and the internet. They're not money makers for TV so the big networks ignore them.

No one is going to watch a music program like they used to. Most people will look online for music performances. Things come online a long time before they're on TV so there's less incentive to watch.

There is 'Later with Jools Holland' which has taken over from 'Whistle Test' and in some ways 'The Tube'.

'Later with Jools Holland' is going to be watched by a musically aware audience.

The point of this thread is where bands will get exposure to a more mainsteam audience, Jonathon Ross was the only show that still has a music guest on. At one time there would be bands on most entertainment shows, now you don't get a band on shows like 'The Lottery' or 'Ant and Dec'.

Firstly, I agree with the sentiments of the OP.

It's ironic that most would put the demise of TOTP etc. down to the internet, yet singers associated with one TV show, X Factor, seem to constantly clog up the top of the charts.

The general public do not want to spend time on the net discovering music for themselves, sadly. TV is the biggest influencer on music sales so I am baffled as to why there isn't a program on it, considering the magnitude of shit across all channels 24/7.

I think Jools is a poor example... look at his show.

It's a bit of him and his orchestra, then some 'world music' act that you won't have heard of nor like, then a painfully dull indie band, then an old act that stopped being good decades ago, and maybe if there's enough time, a quirky or hipstery act before more Joolscore piano.

The thread starter's focus was on pure mainstream.

I used to work from home and once saw Regina Spektor perform on Loose Women and Johnny Flynn perform on This Morning, which amazed me. Alan Titchmarsh also has music on his equally terrible show and maybe GMTV too. As for evening, I think Graham Norton has a music guest on his show, as do/did Friday Night Project, Al Murray and probably others. I don't actually watch any of these shows I've mentioned but I've gleaned this from channel hopping or the TV being on in the background.

I do wish there were more chances for artists on mainstream shows but I think if there were, it would just be more of the same popular artists you see everywhere else. In America, they have the nightly talk shows like the Late Show with Letterman where they have a music guest every night and quite often it's good, new or lesser known artists who you wouldn't expect to see. I'm quite envious of that as we only really have Jools Holland and that's gone downhill badly in the last few years imo.

Before I had the internet I used to rely on music shows for music... now, not so much. I just watch any performances I want to online.
I can't remember the last time I sat down to watch TV just to catch a performance.

The only problem I have music now a days is it's not got many Rock or Indie anymore that's kind of sad everything is X Factor now.

I wonder if we will have anything as good as Brit Pop anytime many no.

There has got too be a good new fresh music scene out there somewhere.
