Leona's long and high notes.
I just find Mariah very unlikeable and that translates to her music for me. There's no denying she has a phenomenal voice, but I'd much prefer to listen to Leona. |

It's not as if Mariah doesn't do long notes... listen to her Daydream album or Lead The Way from Glitter.
Mariah FTW. |

The note at the end of Lead The Way is 20 seconds long.

Leona has a better headvoice, the only one that can rival Whitney's in her prime. Strong, resilient, clear, piercing (in a good way).
However, Leona can only dream of being able to belt the incredibly high G5s and A5s with the OPEN and full sound that Mariah can sing (even now, Mariah still can hit those notes with some rest). The ending of Fly Like A Bird, Anytime You Need A Friend can only be sung by Mariah. If Leona did those belts (I'm not talking about whistle or headvoice), it would sound very thin and not focussed enough. With regards to the whistle register, obviously Mariah no contest (tbh, I don't think Leona has more than two notes in the whistle register) - BUT, eventhough I'm a huge Mariah fan, I'm indifferent to her whistling, because it's not really singing and she doesn't really enunciate her words. Nevertheless, both have displayed long and high notes together so the question isn't really valid ![]() p.s., Leona can still sing her ass off. |

Bullshit. Leona is amazing at whistle notes, she just hardly uses them. I don't suppose you've heard a recording of loving you by Leona when she was 15? She hits F#6, (whistles start at notes in the 6th octave) which is well within the whistle/super head-voice range with ease. Leona does a whistle note in Happy as well. She can hit them just as well as Mariah though I'l, admit she can't go as high. As to Leona's belt voice, its probably better than Mariah's, who sounds shouty, where as Leona has control and a really pleasant tone.
But whistle register only starts at E6, meaning that F#6 is only two notes above it. She definitely doesn't whistle in Happy, that Hapyyyyyy-eeeeeee-eeeeeeee run that she does only goes up to a C6, which doesn't enter whistle register. That's just her head voice, but it probably sounds higher because she does it with great control. |

Who cares who can 'whistle' the highest? I love Mariah, but sometimes she sounds ridiculous and she uses that register when it's completely unnecessary. Leona could blow her out of the water these days anyway..but Mariah's still the best.

Just listened to Loving You on youtube, when Leona sings her 'whistle notes', is she actually whistling for the really really high notes, or singing ? I mean if she's singing I can see why they're called whistle notes, I've never heard anything like it in my life !! |
