I own a phillips 32" TV which is not NTSC compatable . I was thinking of having my Toshiba DVD player chipped to play region one DVDs .
I was told that if I input the NTSC signal via a scart to the TVs RGB enabled scart input that I will be able to watch the above DVDs in full glorious colour .
Can anyone tell me if this is correct or not, as I do not want to chip the DVD player if this will not work .

A 32" Philips TV - are you sure its not NTSC compatible?? , I have a 18 year old 22" Decca TV which displays NTSC (Although Poor) - the only recent TV's (Last 10 years) that cannot display NTSC are 14" and below & the cheapo brands (Goodmans, Matsui).

To answer your question though, if a TV is not NTSC compatible is will either display a Black & White picture (If it is 60Hz compatible) or a Black & White rolling picture (If not 60Hz compatible) even if connected via RGB Scart.

I suspect that your TV will be NTSC playback compatible. It depends quite how much NTSC compatability you need... if you wished to use the TV in USA then, no it's not compatable, however virtually every TV (except very basic ones now) will produce decent results from an NTSC source.

Failing this, most DVD players have a PAL60 option which outputs a quasi NTSC/PAL signal to your TV - this means it's not a true NTSC signal, but an enhanced PAL (UK) signal which your TV can handle.

What makes you think your TV is not NTSC capable? some shops may say it's not - unless a TV features it as a feature of that TV , it may be in the TV but not made a feature...

I have read the TV,s manual which makes no reference to NTSC. Also a review in What Video & TV made some reference to the fact that it will not accept the American format. .I will borrow a friends region 1 player and see how I get on .Thanks for the advice .
