Both incredibly overhyped, both incredibly overrated..

Eliie isn't really doing anything much different from what Little Boots and La Roux did last year.

Marina has songs that just seem to go nowhere. "Hollywood" sounds like something PJ Harvey would have sang if she was 14.

Is this really the creative sound of 2010??

but anyways who do you think is better? I'd personally go for Ellie , the song "Under The Sheets" is just about half decent.

I agree with everything you've written. The sound of 2010 poll is pointless.

I'd go for Ellie Goulding. Under The Sheets is a really solid debut single and Marina and the Diamonds doesn't particularly do anything for me. I liked Mowgli's Road but Hollywood is just okay imo.

The general BBC 'Sound of... 2010' list was pretty weak. I was slightly shocked that Daisy Dares You was even included in the long list at all, her debut single is ridiculously bad and her voice is far from special. This years list has been missing someone who has the potential to go on and be amazing imo.

Are all the acts on that Sound Of 2010 list "overhyped/rated" or just those top two?

I like Delphic's album although it's not amazing. Are Hurts on the list? coz although they've got that pretentious 80's revival vibe about them there's something infectious about their song "Wonderful Life"

as for the others on the list I haven't heard enough to judge yet. But the top two have been exposed alot in the media and on this board so I feel its fair to question the hype.

I'm much more looking forward to follow up albums this year from the likes of The Strokes, Interpol, M.I.A, Klaxons, Hot Chip and possibly Radiohead

and also if Kings Of Leon decide to stop becoming a U2 tribute act then maybe them aswell.

How are they overrated? You probably say that because they are young girls who's music has pop leanings. You did point out Little Boots and La Roux as well so I'm not surprised.

I'd heard of Ellie Goulding ages ago through people mentioning her on this board having seen her doing gigs and stuff. But that to me is good hype, not the sort that makes you a bit sceptical like the "BBC Sound Of" list. It's easy to fall into a trap of refusing to be told what to like by some industry big wigs.

As for Marina and the Diamonds, I actually didn't know anything about her and them till very recently and after only hearing "Hollywood" I'm not so sure. Also whats with these "singers name" and "random band name" groups? Florence and the machine last year, Marina and the diaminds this year. Watch out in 2011 for Karen and the Combine Harvesters.

Here's the big list

I've not heard of all the acts myself, only some. As you can see Hurts are on there. Not heard there stuff yet myself.

Giggs is a good UK rapper, has quite a slow measured flow and is quite hardcore in his song content. Hope he doesn't get watered down too much like Chipmunk or Tinchy.

Joy Orbison, they do dance music, not sure if its a group or one person. Think Annie Macs been big on them on her Friday night radio 1 show.

Owl City, have that annoyingly catchy song "fireflies" out which I somehow think I shouldn't like, but do and then there's "The Drums" and the only thing I've heard from them is "Lets go surfing". There the only others I know of.

I wont completely rubbish any of the acts on that list till I've investigated there musical out put more thoroughly. Hype can sometimes have a negative effect.

I've liked Marina since I heard I Am Not A Robot last year, so I've associated her as an artist from 2009 as opposed to 2010.

no they're overrated because the songs are majorly diluted and dull to the point where I became indifferent to them. That's why I mentioned La Roux and Little Boots in regards to Ellie. But fact that Ellie and Marina are young girls has nothing to do with how well I rate their songs. That's just an assumption on your part.

"Overhyped and overrated" is your opinion OP, other people evidently don't think that.

I happen to think differently - I like both artists, but as eugenespeed said I do associate them more with the past year than the present due to when I discovered them.

However, I'll be very pleased to see both artists gaining recognition this year.

Ellie goulding has already released Under The Sheets and it got to number 53 in 2009 so how can she be the sound of 2010?

Under The Sheets was just a 'buzz' single, Ellie's first proper single is Starry Eyed which will get a whole lot more promotion and is released on Feb 22nd, and her album is out this year too which is the main thing. And as for chart positions - I don't know if you were making a point of that or not, but anyway Ellie and Marina are not artists who's music is primarily aimed at getting into the top 10 in the charts. I think they will be more album-focused artists.

i think marina will do well, she already seems to have quite a big fanbase. i notice on twitter and facebook a lot of fans don't devote themselves to one group, they support several, a lot of la roux fans also like marina and florence.

I've been a fan of Marina since before her first song obsessions was even released. I also think of her as a 2009 artist, but I suppose this sound of 2010 is just people who might be big in 2010.

I'd choose Marina over Ellie (wasn't ellie given away free with itunes the other week) I like her style and her songs.

I much prefer Marina, even though I haven't heard a lot from Ellie yet. But I love Marina's voice and her style of music, she seems to have a lot of personality and is really enthusiastic as well - not to mention that she's a real stunner, which can't hurt

Neither are great singers but I'd say Ellie Goulding is slightly better.

'Under The Sheets' is OK but nothing special...

But 'Hollywood' by Marina & the Diamonds is a brilliant pop song and deserves to be number one for at least two months. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1VTcJfL7RE

It's hardly representative of a year in music, it's just a poll predicting ones to watch. Delphic's album is fantastic, so I hope they do well.

Just don't take these polls too seriously; you don't have to base what you listen to on what is deemed 'the sound', I don't get why people get so annoyed by these lists.

Agreed. I like the idea of people doing these lists, as there's so much music out there that anyone doing a bit of work for me and pointing me towards stuff that might be worth listening to is a good thing imo.

It so happens that, having checked out most of the artists on the Sound of 2010 list, I don't particularly like any of them this year - but no big deal, it was still worth checking.

Then go and look for them, they won't just fall out of the sky.

Especially with the way radio playlists and the charts are atm.
