He was remarkably weaker than any of the others in tonight's episode. I haven't really taken to Maisie since she joined the show, but I thought she was really good in tonights episode. Mark however was very weak IMO and made everything seem very forced.

While I've got used to his wooden style over time, tonight his deficiency as an actor on the show stood out a mile. The other four actors were superb - Amanda Donohoe in particular and the girl who plays Maisie too ( her name escapes me at the moment ).

While they all soared, he was completely out of his depth, even his body language was atrociously unreal. Luckily the reveal was so powerful that he didn't spoil the scenes, but overall I'm rather relieved he's going now. The aftermath would have shown more of his weaknesses and may have marred what's becoming an explosively good storyline.

Exactly. I'm not the biggest Emmerdale fan tbh, it's always on in the background for me, I have however been gripped by this storyline, and tonight's episode was really good. But when I found out he was being killed off, I knew I had to tune in to view it. (That sounds really sinister doesn't it?) I haven't always been a fan of Ryan's character either (James Sutton?) But I think he really shone tonight and gave a really believable performance. However, Mark's character just didn't give any emotions away whatsoever, especially for a man whose life is crashing down around him. It was more like they'd ran out of milk and he'd have to go out in the cold to get some more.

He really let them all down tonight, hopefully they'll be able to move on from this when the aftermath unfolds.

I really don't know why he's so weak. I've never seen him in anything else, so maybe British soaps don't suit him? I can't believe he's been that poor in other things, many of which were USA productions apparently, including Grease 2.

I agree on James Sutton. When given the chance to get stuck into some great drama, most of the Emmy cast rise to the challenge. The actors playing Paddy, Doug and Lexi among others have proved this. And yet Maxwell Caulfield had a golden opportunity for a star turn in this episode and blew it.

They did soar didn't they? I wasn't surprised that Amanda was so good, after all she's a class act with loads of experience (and she does scathing so well ) but the actress who plays Maisie really shone for me tonight too. Even Ryan was more animated than usual and it's a great shame in a way that he didn't punch his 'father'! Maybe he just bumps him off instead

But as much as I've grown accustomed to Mark and am going to miss seeing his Thunderbirds Are Go impersonation each day - his acting WAS under par tonight to say the least The storyline deserved more than he delivered - simples!

But I'm still going to miss him!

Love it, love it, love it! That is exactly what he looked like, well done!

Has the character EVER lost it though and screamed, shouted or cried even?

he's supposed to be like that, he's supposed to be an annoying drip - that the audience love to hate.

if an actor, is getting a response from the audience, he's done his job properly.

lol thank you!

I don't think he ever has, considering everything that has happened to him and his family since they joined the show, and never once has he 'lost his cool'

I mean even at the prospect of his two children sleeping together he stayed rather calm and collected. Instead letting Natasha and Faye sort out his problems.

I was gutted though that Ryan didn't lash out at him, I was really urging him to give him a good beating, you never know it might have knocked some emotion into him!

Can't say that James Sutton was much better, the three women were good though especially Amanda.

Me too - but I feel post-Lambgate he's best off out of it. Which he really will be soon

What's being pointed out here is his bad acting. While in other episodes that suited the weakling role fine, tonight required more than being a drip. It was big emotion time, and for me he just didn't clear that hurdle.

Absolutely agree- he was completely out of his depth- out of everybody in that room- he should have been the most devastated- the most upset- at one point he says it's the worst day of his life but he simply looked confused- his entire life is falling apart and he looks like he's trying to remember his lines- completely unbelievable

He's terrible, but he's so bad it's becoming quite amusing. I'm sad to see him go now, after tonight.

The one who plays Maisie was good tonight. great reaction.

And Amanda also, very convincing.

The one who plays faye, well, she was alright.

James Suton. Was, average.

Such a good point - I was aware of his shortcomings when I watched the episode live, but was so swept away by the bravura performances of Amanda Donohoe, Kim Thomson and James Sutton - (and I suppose I must commend the actress who plays Maisie for staying so perfectly in self-centered character) - that I didn't realise how truly dreadful and inept Caulfield (?sp) was until I re-watched the episode today. That's not a thing I usually do with regard to soap episodes, but, like many other posters, I found it all so enthralling the temptation was irresistible.

Quite so. Let's not get carried away. Picking on individual characters and blaming the actor without the context of the action, the writing or the direction is pretty lame.

A lot of Mark's part has been to enable the characters around him to move the plot along. His is a downbeat, understated, brooding character. This also allows a stark contrast for his dark side, he is a man burdened by a secret past, as we are now seeing. None of the current drama would be credible had be been played as a more upbeat, outgoing, cheerful figure. Equally, the current denouement would not have half as much impact if the cast were competing and scene stealing from one another instead of playing together for the good of the company.

I haven't always been his greatest fan but there should be someone with two penn'orth in his defence.
