She did Strictly Come Dancing, and lets face it Dancing on Ice is simply ITV's copy of that, as close as they could possibly get without being sued.

It's not a skating competition it's an ice dancing competition, she's qualified to judge the performance element.

Its not an ice skating competition though is it.
Primarily its an entertainment show that incorporates Ice Skating and Dancing for our Sunday night enjoyment. |

Performing on ice is not the same as performing in concert. She's an ex-Spice Girl, barely turned 30, blonde, and with a nice rack. The sad reality....

So her opinion is of no consequence because she's a blonde woman?

Strange question indeed. Why should Jason Gardiner (sp?) be judging an ice-dancing competition?

What the hell? Fine, if Jason Gardner isn't anything to do with ice-skating, then he shouldn't be judging either.... Don't you think it's all just crass? and people seem to support a judge if they like/agree with them?!??!?!? When the judge is meant to be the one who knows more than the audience....!![]()

She has the same right as Ruthie did. They are both performers, not ice dancers, and are there to judges the performances. It's never been said they are qualified to judge the finer points of the technical skating.

To be honest, I don't understand all of the Emma hating on this forum. I thought she did great on Sunday and went into the show with a great attitude. She wasn't overly critical in the same way that Jason is (Although I love Jason too). I think she proved herself in the scoring stakes, as in no performance did she give a duff score, especially in comparison with the others, for the first time in years they all seemed to agree roughly.
Like she's said herself on a number of occasions, she's not going into the show to criticise the ice skating, she's looking on the performance elements and how well they connect with the audience - after all it is the audience who are keeping them in the competition. |

I think my point was clear enough. Of course she's not invalid because she's blonde, but she's there because of her looks. Pure and simple. She's replaced an older woman who actually knew what she was talking about. It's inane....

She is a famous name in the performance business and brings the judging panel the surface glamour and charisma that Karen, Nicky and Robin, knowledgeable as they are, lack.
If it was a question of simply commenting on the performances then any of the forumites could probably do just as good a job, if not better. But it isn't. It's about gaining interest from the media and giving your prime-time show a bit of credibility with those TV execs for whom the calibre of celeb you pull in is an important gauge of success. Emma Bunton was a genius signing from the point of view of getting one over on other reality shows - and to stay on screen, DOI's going to have to keep doing that. |

I think you're confusing right with qualification. She has the right because she was asked by the producers to fill a vacant slot (ooer missus).
As for qualification - she replaced Ruthie Henshall who knew nothing about skating but was there purely to judge performance. Emma is there for the same reason; her qualification to judge this comes from her background as a performer for many years now in front of millions on a live stage. She doesn't have the same performance background as Ruthie but it's questionable as to which is more relevant. Emma's performance background did involve selling many song and dance routines to a very large paying audience; she must know something about what appeals and what doesn't. Ruthie's performance as a judge over the past two series has been questionable. Not because of her own qualification but because of her apparent bias and odd marking. Her comments also sometimes appeared off the wall. I'm not saying she was the only judge to do this but the fact that she came simply from a performance background and then proceeded to mark/critique in what seemed to be a rather bizarre way made her vulnerable and, if this board was anything to go by, she was not at all popular. I don't think Emma had anything to do with Ruthie's departure. Ruthie managed that all by herself - she'd have gone anyway. |

Funny how nobody is comparing all this to the Alesha Dixon uproar!! If Emma can be a judge without unfavourable comparison's, why not Alesha? So double standard!

Ruthie is 42, Emma is shortly 34. Hardly the age gap between Arlene and Alesha is it. Alesha is 35 years younger, Emma is 8 years younger. Also, she has been a perfomer since a very early age. That arguement is weak. |

.Emma herself said on the first show that she was there to judge the performance aspect and as far as that is concerned she has plenty of experience. |

There are problems with all combinations. Ruthie was qualified to point out that people couldn't act very well - given her status, even the actors - but people didn't like her doing that. Alesha was a very good dancer but its doubtful if she was qualified to judge better dancers . Emma isn't that qualified at all but she's unlikely to comment on what she doesn't know enough about and she can say more general things without having Ruthie's status or Alesha's lack of knowledge.
Jason has the opposite problem - he's there to judge the overall performances and the dancing technical detail and is qualified to do both - but as he's looking at detail he's bound to find more wrong. |

Sorry Duryea, but your arguement is not up to much. Age difference only 8 years? and Emma performing from a young age? Mmm

Didnt say it wasn't accurate but def not relevant. My point is, so what if Emma is only 8 years younger than Ruthie compared to Alesha's 35 years younger than Arlene. Also hasn't Alesha also been performing from a very young age?

Nonsense. It's an entertainment show based on a skating competition. It doesn't just 'incorporate' skating and dancing. You even make it sound like the skating and dancing are separate. |
