Phone rings.
Me:Hello?
Caller:Hello am I speaking with
Line cuts off but I can hear people talking in background.
Me:Hello? Hello?
Line goes dead/disconnects. Dial 1471
"You were called today at (time) by 000 00 000"

Any idea where this might have come from? I thought if it was withheld or from abroad you get "the caller withheld their number",or "the callers details are not available",or similar?

Some people use anonymous caller reject, meaning that if someone calls them and withholds their number, or is calling from abroad, they don't get though.

A lot of companies that call up to flog you stuff use withheld numbers - and that means they won't get through to some people - so they spoof a caller ID (easy to do when using VoIP) so that they can bypass it.
Also, it means that you won't know who they are!

I figured it was probably a sales call of some kind but did 1471 as I've got several job applications on the go and it could have been one of them phoning me. I had one call once where a 1471 returned the full American number including "001 (area code) (number)".but I've never had a string of zeroes like this one before.

if the calls comes from a witheld number then 1471 will tell you this, if a call comes from a network not comptable with your own you would get a message saying "we do not have the number to return the call".

all the 0s that you gotis a strange one, most likely i think it would be due to a fault in the exchange (maybe a one off one occurnace)

If the calls originated from a private switchboard then it is equally likely that the zeros are programmed into that as the CLI.

Many switchboards let you set any number you like as the CLI. I could if I so wished programme my office phone to send all zeros or any other number I like. It is not that difficult.

There are legitimate reasons for doing this of course. Say you have a department of 20 people, they each may have a direct dial in number that goes straight to their extension. But you may want most incomming calls to the department to go to a specific number. So you programme up the CLI for all 20 phones to send the group number.

I often spoofed the CLI, but only for fun to friends and family or when someone didn't accept withheld numbers and I didn't want to send a number.
